On Thursday, March 4, the 83rd Anniversary New York Daily News Golden Gloves Boxing competition will be held in the Glen Cove High School Gymnasium. At least 10 bouts will be held in the open and novice divisions of this historic tournament. Winners of these bouts advance on to further rounds and hopefully to the finals, which will be held at Madison Square Garden on March 25-26.
This event is sponsored by the Glen Cove Boxing Club and the City of Glen Cove Department of Parks and Recreation. The doors open at 6:30 p.m.; boxing begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 each and are available at the door the night of the show beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The Glen Cove Boxing Club was established in May 2005 and is dedicated to serving the youth of our community at absolutely no charge. The club recently opened in its new location provided by the City of Glen Cove on Carney Street Extension adjacent to Glen Cove Child Day Care. It is staffed by an experienced and dedicated group of volunteer coaches who are all registered and certified with USA Boxing. Since opening, the club has had a great response from local youngsters, including Glen Cove High School student Ashley Conklin. Conklin will be competing in this year’s Golden Gloves competition in the Women’s 152-pound Novice Division.
First held in 1927, the New York Daily News Golden Gloves is the oldest and largest amateur boxing tournament in the country and has helped launch the careers of more than 30 world champions. Proceeds from this event will help to operate the club throughout the year. Proceeds will also fund a scholarship, along with the Glen Cove Anglers Club, to be presented to a graduating Glen Cove High School student.
