Eva Gach, a resident of Glen Cove and Roslyn, passed away on Aug. 13, 2010 at age 94. Her fortitude, strength and elegance were assets in a remarkable life and were recognized by all who knew her. Born in Budapest, Hungary, she endured the hardships of WWII and lived in Beirut, Lebanon before emigrating to the USA in 1952. She was an accomplished equestrian in her youth; she spoke five languages and was a regionally recognized bridge player. She was a major influence in her husband’s successful art career; they had been married for 57 years and lived in Roslyn Heights. She is survived by daughter Susie Peelle; son Peter; grandchildren, Michael, Beau, Christopher and Evan Peelle, Drew and Eve Xanthopoulos; and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by daughter Eva Xanthopoulos and husband George Gach. Arrangements entrusted to Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home, Glen Cove. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Church, Bryant Ave., Roslyn on Saturday, Aug. 28 at 10 a.m. Interment private.
Haywood T. Hammond Sr.
Haywood T. Hammond Sr. died on Aug. 10, 2010. Husband of the late Malvina. Father of Haywood Thomas Hammond Jr. and Gail Masters. Grandfather of Tia Masters-Bryant. Brother of Catherine Willett, Joseph and Milton. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Thelma, Pearl and Catherine Hammond and a host of nieces and nephews. Arrangements were made by the Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head. Funeral service at the funeral home. Interment private.
Elizabeth Gere Byrnes
Elizabeth (Ibbie) Gere Byrnes, of Scituate, MA, and formerly of Glen Cove, died on July 30, 2010 at the Life Care Center at the age of 101. She was born in Syracuse and lived in Glen Cove for nearly 50 years before moving to Scituate three years ago to be close to her family.
Katia Bassanini- Curiano of Manhattan and Porza, Switzerland, died on July 20, 2010. She is survived by husband Thomas Curiano of Manhattan (formerly of Glen Cove). Also survived by Robert and Rose Marie Curiano of Glen Cove; her parents, Eros and Erica Bassanini of Comano, Switzerland; brother Alessandro and wife Marion of Agnuzzo, Switzerland; and Thomas’ sisters, Marjorie and Patricia; and brother Robert.
Mrs. Bassanini-Curiano was a highly accomplished visual and performance artist. She received her diploma in visual art from ESAV, Geneva in 1996. Recent solo exhibitions included “Performa 09” at Forever and Today Gallery, Manhattan, Centro d’arte la Rada, Locarno Switzerland (2009), and Aktuelle Kunst, Luzern in 2006. Group shows included Kunstahalle Vienna, Austria (2009), Musee Rath in Geneva, Switzerland (2008), and The Sculpture Center in Long Island City in 2007. She was awarded the International Videoart prize at San Benedetto del Tronto, Italy in 2004. Her work continues to be represented by Mitterand-Sanz Gallery of Zurich, Switzerland. Funeral services were held in Lugano, Switzerland and she rests at Morcote Cimitero, in Morcote, Switzerland.
