Arthur E. Sweid, formerly of Glen Cove, died on Oct. 24 in Richmond, VA. He was the executive director of Glen Cove’s Community Development Agency in the 1970s and ‘80s, retiring in 1985. Beloved husband of Pat, and father of Eric (Carol), Nancy Henderson (Glenn) and Michael (Theresa) and grandfather of Daniel and Zachary.
Allen Gardner Weise died on Oct. 17, 2009 in Glen Cove Hospital of respiratory failure. He was 86. Allen was born on April 2, 1923 in Washington, DC. He lived there until after WWII.
Allen enlisted in the Navy and served as a lieutenant j.g. in the Pacific on mine sweepers for three years. After discharge from the Navy in 1946 he returned to George Washington University, where he was a chemistry major, to complete his BS degree. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
On Sept. 17, 1948, he married Anne Law. They shared 61 years as best friends.
While working at the Office of Naval Intelligence, he attended George Washington University Law School at night.
In 1954, the family moved to Manhasset where Allen was a patent attorney, later a partner, at Brumbaugh, Free, Graves and Donohue in New York City.
He was active in the Community Reformed Church in Manhasset where he was a member of consistory and a member of the Port Washington Yacht Club where he played tennis as often as possible. Form 1962-1966 he was a trustee and acting mayor of Plandome Heights.
After 45 years in Manhasset the family moved to Glen Cove.
Allen is survived by his wife Anne; a son Glen; a daughter Susan; and two grandchildren, Jessica and Glen Weise.
Allen was cremated. The service was private.
Richard P. Deegan, of Sea Cliff, died on Nov. 2, 2009. Founder of Richard P. Deegan & Son Plumbing, he was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII. He was past president of the Joint Board of Plumbing Examiners of Nassau County, past president of the Glen Head Rotary and a former trustee of the Village of Sea Cliff. Husband of the late Helen (nee Yoniak). Father of Helen Wareham (Tom), Eileen Krieb (Larry), Tricia Scott (Richard) and the late Paul (Patricia). Grandfather of Thomas, Kathleen, Kristine, Colleen, Nicole, Becky, Bryan, Kellie, Christopher and Megan. Great-grandfather of Luke. Brother of Francis (Nancy) and the late George (Janice). Ruth Marie Pecan, 89, of West End, NC, passed away peacefully on Nov, 1, 2009 at home. Her husband, Walter H. Pecan, preceded her in death in 1965. She is survived by her daughter Ruth Stolting and son-in-law Robert Stolting of West End as well as her brother August Zoll of Cedar Grove, NJ.
Ruth Pecan was born Dec. 8, 1919 in Brooklyn. She received a bachelor’s degree from Wagner College in Staten Island. She then attended and graduated from Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School. She worked at Chase Manhattan Bank in Manhattan until her marriage on June 3, 1945. Interested also in the field of nursing, she worked tirelessly as a homemaker and caregiver to members of her family.
Ruth lived in Glendale, Queens, later moving to Locust Valley. She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Glen Cove, for 45 years and sang in the church choir for many years.
When her daughter and son-in-law moved south to North Carolina, she also decided to move down in 2001 to enjoy life with them in a carriage house on their farm. She enjoyed the camaraderie of her new friends at Our Saviour Lutheran Church, Southern Pines, NC, and felt that these nine years were among the happiest of her life.
Visiting at the Funeral Home of Dodge-Thomas, Glen Cove, on Nov. 10 from 9 to 10 a.m. A graveside service will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery, Queens, at 11 a.m. officiated by Rev. Charles Edward Murcott, of Glen Cove, died on Oct. 20, 2009 at age 89. A graduate of Wesleyan University, he was a WWII US Navy veteran. He was a retired president, chairman and board member of Lumex, parent company of Cybex International, a LI-based manufacturer of medical and rehabilitation equipment that he founded in 1947. He was an active volunteer and philanthropist, serving as chairman of Huntington Hospital’s Board from 1985-90. He also served on the board of Nature Conservancy, the LI Association and as president of Huntington Country Club. Husband of Constance (nee Hillery) for 67 years. Father of Peter (Fran), Susan Coffman (Ralph), Elizabeth Beach (CA Beach) and Thomas (Paula). Grandfather of Kristen, Dylan, Connor, Travis, Madeline, Amelia, Louisa and Lila. Chester J. Huestis, formerly of Port Washington, died on Oct. 19, 2009 at age 51. Son of Irene (nee Mioduszewski) of the Glen Cove Senior Center and the late George.
