Robert T. Stratford, of Sea Cliff, died on Oct. 3, 2009. He was a veteran of WWII and a 60-plus year member of I.B.E.W. Local # 3. Husband of Jean K. Father of Anne Lowther (William), Robert, Jr. (Christine), Michael (Patty), Amy Reda (John) and Lynn Stratford (Robert Copeland). Grandfather of Will, Robbie and Diana Lowther, Daniel and Thomas Stratford, Steven, Matthew, Michelle and Mikey Joe Stratford, Katie, John and Nicholas Reda and Katie and Annie Copeland. Angelo Medugno, of Bayville, died on Oct. 3, 2009. Husband of the late Stephanie. Father of Stephanie Hill and Frank Cucitro. Grandfather of Joseph, Timothy and Debbie. Rose Marie DiGiovanni (nee Fichera), born in the Little Italy section of Manhattan on Oct. 18, 1917, died peacefully on Oct. 2, 2009, two weeks prior to her 92nd birthday. Rose was married in 1943 to her loving husband Patsy who served as Santa Claus in Farmingdale for many years and predeceased her in 1989. She spent her life busy as a homemaker and employed seamstress. She raised her family through hardship, yet always surrounded those she loved with her broad smile, strong, loving arms and fierce determination. Having spent most of her married life in Farmingdale, Rose moved to New Jersey in 2001 and had spent the last years of her life in the loving care of the devoted staff at the Christian Healthcare Center in Wyckoff, NJ. She leaves behind her loving family: son Earnest and wife Georgeann of Convent Station, NJ, daughter Phyliss and husband Bill of Upper Saddle River, NJ and granddaughters Lisa DiGiovanni, Meredith Tedford and husband Jamie, and grandson Will Maloney and wife Jessica. She also leaves four great grandchildren, Nathan, Lucy and Whitney Tedford and “Kiddo” Maloney. Her extended family includes granddaughter Connie Calabrese and husband David and their daughters Julie, Melissa and Catie.
Arrangements were made by the C.C. Van Emburgh Funeral Home, Ridgewood. Funeral Mass was held on Oct. 7 at St. Gabriel’s RC Church, Saddle River, with burial at St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale. Joseph Fernandez, of Glen Cove, died on Sept. 30, 2009. Husband of Katherine. Father of Barbara (George) Stasiuk, Joseph Jr. (Cathy) and Pual (Patricia). Harold W. Seidman, former Glen Cove civic leader, died on Sept. 27, 2009 of congestive heart failure. Hal, as he was known, lived with his wife Miriam (Mimi) at Peconic Landing in Greenport. They were married for 66 years. Mr. Seidman received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from St. John’s University and an MS in taxation from Long Island University. He served with distinction in the European Theatre being awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Like many of his generation, the Greatest Generation, he did not talk much of his service. He was discharged from the Army in 1946 with the rank of major.
He was variously post commander of the Jewish War Veterans and executive vice president of the Queens County Reserve Officers Association. He remained active in the U.S. Army Reserves until he retired from duty in 1970 with the rank of lieutenant colonel.
Cornelius Patrick Pope Hayes passed away on Sept. 14, 2009. Neal was born in Glen Cove on March 22, 1936. He is survived by his daughter Linda Hayes; brothers, Jack (Bronnie) and Jimmy (Jean) Hayes; and sister Mary Hayes. His son R. Scott Hayes and brother Billy Hayes predeceased him.
Neal will be remembered for is fantastic sense of humor as well as his love for tennis, golf and dancing. He will also be admired for his courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease for over 30 years.
A Mass was held at St. William Catholic Church on Sept. 24. Donations may be made in Neal’s memory to DeathwithDignity.org.
Elizabeth Anne Izard, 89, of Spring House, formerly of Wilton, CT, for over 40 years, passed away on September 28, 2009, at Spring House Estates. She was the wife of the late Richard D. Izard, Sr. Elizabeth was born in Yonkers, NY, on May 26, 1920, to the late Claude L. and Isabelle K. (Kniskern) Turner. She was a graduate of Curtis High School in NY, Class of 1937 and graduated from Boston College in 1941 with a degree in Physical Education. Elizabeth served in the United States Navy as a Lieutenant in the Medical Service Corps and worked in the U.S. Naval Hospital in Chelsea, MA. She was a physical therapist for 20 years from the mid-1970s – mid-1990s. She was a member of Congregational Church in Wilton, CT, member of Wilton Women’s Club, loving homemaker, avid golfer and bridge player, and enjoyed oil painting. She is survived by her two children: Richard D. Izard, Jr. (Helen Angelina) of Quakertown, PA, and Diane Doroski (Victor) of Rancho Santa Fe, CA; one sister Carol Green of Shelton, CT, and five grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister Suzanne and an infant son. Relatives and friends are invited to her funeral service, Thursday, October 1, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at Emil J. Ciavarelli Family Funeral Home, 951 E. Butler Pike, Ambler, PA 19002. The viewing will be held Thursday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be Saturday morning October 3, 2009 at Cherry Valley Memorials, Schoharie, NY.
