Helen Louise Harwood
Helen Louise Harwood, a Glen Cove resident for over 50 years, who grew up in Glenwood Landing and graduated Salutatorian from Hofstra University, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours on Feb. 21, 2009. She was 89 years young. Helen passed 13 years after her beloved husband, Frank Edmunds Harwood.
Arve Jensen, of Oyster Bay, died on Sept. 12, 2009 at age 77. Beloved husband of Barbara. Loving father of Tine Graziosi (Piero) and Tom (Terri). Dear brother of Kari. Gemma V. Cioffi, of Wantagh, formerly of Glen Cove, died on Sept. 11, 2009 at age 89. Wife of the late John J. Mother of Elaine Cioffi Friedman (Harvey) and Joan Kelly (Padric). David P. “DC” Caggiano, of Glen Cove, died on Sept. 8, 2009. Son of Pat and Lee. Brother of Patty, Debbie (Doug), Lenny (Randee), Mary-Ann (Brad) and Aimee (Allen). Uncle of Heather, Holly, Matthew, Kaitlin, Julia, Michael, Olviia, Carly, Natalie and Luka. Arrangements were made by the Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head. Funeral Mass at St. Patrick’s Church. Rose M. Trotta, of Glen Cove, died on Sept. 7, 2009. Wife of Thomas for 59 years. Mother of Thomas J., Carol Sheils and the late Gerald T. Sister of Faye Graziose. Grandmother of Patrick, Charlotte, Christina and Thomas.
Rose graduated from Roslyn High School and attended her 25th and 50th Class Reunions there. Rose was not only a homemaker but a dedicated volunteer. She was past president of Mother’s Club at St. Boniface Martyr School where she also helped to organize the Fashion Shows for the church and school. She volunteered at Glen Cove Hospital and received her 25 year pin for the Ladies Auxiliary. She was a talented pianist who founded the singing group Stardust Singers at the Glen Cove Senior Center where she was a member. She performed at the GC Senior Center and nursing homes all over Long Island. Rose played the piano at the annual Glen Cove Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. She loved to entertain and frequently threw parties because she loved to cook and was an excellent hostess. Rose was an avid swimmer who enjoyed summers at Prybils Beach. Rose was a pianist, performer, cook, writer and mostly a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and volunteer.

Gerard (Jay) Figari, 81, passed away Sept. 7, 2009 at his home in Jensen Beach, FL, with his family by his side. Jay was born Feb. 21, 1928 to Louis and Vitalia Figari. Raised in Glen Cove, Jay married his high school sweetheart Mary Richardi. He and his brother Buddy started the Figari Bros. Road Construction Company. Jay was devoted to his family, an active member of the Locust Valley Rotary Club, enjoyed flying and had a passion for boating. He moved to Ft. Lauderdale in 1969. Jay was a member of the Gulfstream Sailing Club and the Coral Ridge Yacht Club (1994-2006.) He recently moved to Jensen Beach and was predeceased by his wife Mary; brothers, James, Louis, Buddy; and sisters, Louise and Genevieve. Survivors include his sister Dolores Figari of Tamarac; his sons, Thomas and his wife Sallie of Coral Springs, Louis and his wife Liz of Virginia Beach, Jerry and his wife Anne of Jensen Beach; his daughter Cynthia of Ft. Lauderdale. Additionally, he leaves behind 10 grandchildren, Derek, Nikki, Liza, Ryan, Christopher, Jay, Lauren, James, John Paul, Joseph; and several great-grandchildren.
Arthur Cohen, MD
Arthur Cohen, MD, formerly of Glen Cove, died on Sept. 6, 2009. Dr. Cohen served as a family physician in the Glen Cove community for a career that spanned over four decades. He served Glen Cove Hospital as both associate director and director of the Family Medicine Residency Program. In those roles he contributed to the education of over 100 family physicians, many of whom still practice in our community. Funeral service held at Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home, Glen Cove. William P.O. Clarke Jr., of Glen Cove, died on Sept. 3, 2009 at age 88. Husband of the late Eugenia H.O. Father of Nancy, William, Anthony and Gail. Brother of Margaret. Grandfather of William, Lisa, Melissa, Bryan, Andrew, Stephen and Elizabeth. Private family gathering at Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Edith Timms (nee Knisely) of Glen Head, passed away on Aug. 31, 2009 after a brief bout with cancer. She was born in Kensington, PA, on Nov. 8, 1923 and was the daughter of the late Rosalie Knisely (nee Criss ) and the late Paul Knisely. Just after WWII, Edith ran a small restaurant in Washington D.C. along with her sister, the late Letha K. Laurie of Appomattox, VA. She also worked for the government in the medical records department. She later met and married the late Robert J. Timms. The young couple moved to Manhattan, KS and Chicago, IL, before moving to Syosset and then settling in Glen Head, were they lived for 55 years.
While raising her young family she frequently volunteered for A.H.R.C. She worked for many years at the Manhasset Junior High School Library. Mrs. Timms was a prolific artist who loved gardening and nature.
Mrs. Timms leaves behind her four children, Suzanne Hamilton (nee Timms) (Philip) of Scarborough, ME, Andrew J. Timms of Rocky Point, Barbara Nelson (nee Timms) (Steven) of Huntington Station, and John R. Timms of Lake Villa, IL. She also leaves behind three grandsons, Philip “Benny” Hamilton, Patrick J. Timms and Daniel A. Nelson.
Arrangements were made by the Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head. Funeral service held at the funeral home. Interment V. A. National Cemetery, Calverton. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Nassau County Museum of Art, Roslyn, NY.
