Gerard (Jay) Figari, 81, passed away Sept. 7, 2009 at his home in Jensen Beach, FL, with his family by his side. Jay was born Feb. 21, 1928 to Louis and Vitalia Figari. Raised in Glen Cove, Jay married his high school sweetheart Mary Richardi. He and his brother Buddy started the Figari Bros. Road Construction Company. Jay was devoted to his family, an active member of the Locust Valley Rotary Club, enjoyed flying and had a passion for boating. He moved to Ft. Lauderdale in 1969. Jay was a member of the Gulfstream Sailing Club and the Coral Ridge Yacht Club (1994-2006.) He recently moved to Jensen Beach and was predeceased by his wife Mary; brothers, James, Louis, Buddy; and sisters, Louise and Genevieve. Survivors include his sister Dolores Figari of Tamarac; his sons, Thomas and his wife Sallie of Coral Springs, Louis and his wife Liz of Virginia Beach, Jerry and his wife Anne of Jensen Beach; his daughter Cynthia of Ft. Lauderdale. Additionally, he leaves behind 10 grandchildren, Derek, Nikki, Liza, Ryan, Christopher, Jay, Lauren, James, John Paul, Joseph; and several great-grandchildren.
Arthur Cohen, MD
Arthur Cohen, MD, formerly of Glen Cove, died on Sept. 6, 2009. Dr. Cohen served as a family physician in the Glen Cove community for a career that spanned over four decades. He served Glen Cove Hospital as both associate director and director of the Family Medicine Residency Program. In those roles he contributed to the education of over 100 family physicians, many of whom still practice in our community. Funeral service held at Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home, Glen Cove. William P.O. Clarke Jr., of Glen Cove, died on Sept. 3, 2009 at age 88. Husband of the late Eugenia H.O. Father of Nancy, William, Anthony and Gail. Brother of Margaret. Edith Timms (nee Knisely) of Glen Head, passed away on Aug. 31, 2009 after a brief bout with cancer. She was born in Kensington, PA, on Nov. 8, 1923 and was the daughter of the late Rosalie Knisely (nee Criss ) and the late Paul Knisely. Just after WWII, Edith ran a small restaurant in Washington D.C. along with her sister, the late Letha K. Laurie of Appomattox, VA. She also worked for the government in the medical records department. She later met and married the late Robert J. Timms. The young couple moved to Manhattan, KS and Chicago, IL, before moving to Syosset and then settling in Glen Head, were they lived for 55 years.
While raising her young family she frequently volunteered for A.H.R.C. She worked for many years at the Manhasset Junior High School Library. Mrs. Timms was a prolific artist who loved gardening and nature.
Mrs. Timms leaves behind her four children, Suzanne Hamilton (nee Timms) (Philip) of Scarborough, ME, Andrew J. Timms of Rocky Point, Barbara Nelson (nee Timms) (Steven) of Huntington Station, and John R. Timms of Lake Villa, IL. She also leaves behind three grandsons, Philip “Benny” Hamilton, Patrick J. Timms and Daniel A. Nelson.
Arrangements were made by the Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head. Funeral service held at the funeral home. Interment V. A. National Cemetery, Calverton. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Nassau County Museum of Art, Roslyn, NY.
Michael Galluccio, a life-long resident of Glen Cove, passed away from complications of a skull-based tumor on July 16, 2009 at the age of 51. Mike’s true passion for his family, friends and church sustained him through almost five years after his diagnosis. Services were held at the Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head, where the outpouring of love and comfort were overwhelming. A funeral service was held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Glen Cove with the most generous reception hosted by loving friends from the community. Mike is survived by his mother Marian (the late Angelo); his wife Suellen; and his children, Mark and Julie. He is brother to Joseph (Barbara) and Katherine (Kenneth).
