Martin William Shaughnessy III

Martin William (Bill) Shaughnessy III, 65, of Honesdale, PA, died on Jan. 2, 2010 at his home, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, the former Ann M. Swiezbin. The couple married June 12, 1965 in St. Mary’s Church in Roslyn.

Born Jan. 22, 1944 in New York City, he was the son of M. William Shaughnessy of Beach Lake, PA, and Ellen Shaughnessy of Waterhill, FL, formerly of Glen Head. He was a United States Air Force veteran of Vietnam and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. Along with his wife Ann, he owned and operated Shaughnessy Refrigeration, Inc. for 36 years.

Also surviving are his children, Brian Shaughnessy and wife Kim of Souderton, PA, Kelly Watkins and fiancée Kevin Bishop of Honesdale, William P. Shaughnessy and wife Sapna of Glenside, PA, and Maureen Kirchdoerfer and husband Justin of Fort Worth, TX; sisters Kathleen Bleier and husband Larry of Davie, FL, Ellen P. Snow and husband Todd of Hollywood, FL, and Monica Bender and husband Bill of Southport, NC; his brother Kevin Shaughnessy and wife Kate of Hillsborough, NJ; his grandchildren, John, Patrick and Amber Watkins and Lauren, Julia and Maya Shaughnessy, who were his pride, joy and the light of his life; and many nieces and nephews.

Bill will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched. He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather who truly loved his family and his Lord.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Jan. 7 at St. John the Evangelist Church in Honesdale with interment St. Mary’s Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to St. John the Evangelist Parish, 414 Church St., Honesdale, PA 18431.

Mary L. Beier

Mary L. Beier, of Manhasset, died on Dec. 30, 2009. Mrs. Beier is survived by her son Christopher Rourke Beier, who now lives in Fort Collins, and by her daughter, Jean Clare Beier Murphy and son-in-law Chuck Murphy (also of Manhasset), who now live in Chicago. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, and dear friends.

Born Mary Louise Cregan on Nov. 13, 1941 in Elmhurst, Mrs. Beier was the daughter of Patrick and Mary (O’Rourke) Cregan, immigrants to New York from Ireland. She attended St. Bartholomew School in Elmhurst and was graduated in 1959 from Bishop McDonnell Memorial High School in Brooklyn.

She moved to Manhasset with her husband and mother in 1972. Until the birth of her children, she worked as an executive assistant at the FBI Offices at the World Trade Center in Manhattan. Her children, Jean and Chris, graduated from Manhasset High School. She later worked for many years in the office of Dr. William Shea in Manhasset.

She was preceded in death by her husband Donald Beier and her sisters, Kathleen C. Mallison, formerly of Manhattan, and Eileen C. Twomey, formerly of Port Washington.

A memorial gathering was to be held at the family home on Jan. 9. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Catholic Charities USA, at P.O. Box 17066, Baltimore, MD 21297-1066 or at

Angelina Riolo

Angelina (Angie) Riolo (nee Guzzello), a lifetime resident of Glen Cove, died on Dec. 29, 2009. Wife of the late Giuseppe. Mother of Theresa Paulich (Sina), Lenny, Caesar (late Irene), Joseph (Mary Jane) and Frank (late Lynda). Also survived by 13 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Sister of the late Frances Basile, the late Rose Guzzello and Joseph Guzzello; many nieces and nephews, and many neighborhood friends. She was loved by all her family. Arrangements were made by the Marcus L. Bianconi Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of St. Rocco. Interment Holy Rood Cemetery.



Obituary: James D. Neillands Sr.

James D. “Spyder” Neillands Sr., of Glen Cove, died on Dec. 13, 2009 in his 95th year. Husband of the late Sally (nee Slater). Father of Gary, Sandy (Mike McCloskey) and the late James D. Jr. Brother of the late Richard G. Grandfather of two oldest granddaughters, Kimberly (Neillands) LoMedico of North Miami, FL, and Karen Neillands Jr. of Huntington, NY, and also Keely (Tom) and Ian McCloskey. Great-grandfather of Jake and James.

He was a WWII Army Air Corps veteran serving on the 20th USAAF in the Pacific Theatre. He was an Exempt member of the Glen Cove Fire Dept. Hook & Ladder, a member of American Legion Young Simmons Post 1765 and member of the Glen Cove Hall of Fame.

He worked for many years, along with his son, as an international transport of thoroughbred fine equine. He worked for F.B. Pratt and was considered a true Gold Coast survivor.

A graveside service was held at St. Paul’s Churchyard Cemetery on Dec. 21. Arrangements under the direction of Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Donations may be made to Young Simmons Post, PO Box 337, Glen Cove, NY 11542.
