Edward T. Yavoski, a lifelong resident of the Gold Coast, died on Nov. 10, 2009 at age 86. Born in Oyster Bay, Ed lived in Locust Valley in the house he built in 1953 with his late wife Clara (nee Chebuske), his daughter Linda Leddy (Allentown, PA), and son Tom Yavoski (Plano, TX). Ed was a most devoted and loyal husband and a happy and caring father. In addition to his children, Ed is survived by his grandchildren, Greg Leddy, Jessica Leddy Carter and Zach Yavoski; son-in-law Joe Leddy and daughter-in-law Mitzi Yavoski. Also survived by his sister Brenda Wozack (Walter).
Ed knew, and was known by, a great many people across Long Island. From the age of 16, he was a drummer in a three-piece polka band, playing most every weekend at weddings and dances. As a carpenter (Local 7), Ed built homes and offices throughout the area. And in his later years, he enjoyed just sitting in the front yard tending his beautiful flowers and talking to people who passed by. His smile will be missed by his family, friends and neighbors.

Arthur F. Merrick, 82, of Little River, SC, and formerly of Sea Cliff, died Aug. 30, 2009. Husband of Patricia. Father of Nancy (Patrick) Furlong of Glen Cove and Patricia (Patrick) Turbitt of Lagrange, NY. Grandfather of Emily Furlong and Matthew Turbitt. There will be a funeral Mass Saturday, Nov. 28 at St. Boniface Martyr Church, Sea Cliff at 10:30 a.m. Mr. Merrick’s ashes will be interred at Locust Valley Cemetery immediately following.
Robert C. Picoli, of Old Brookville, died on Nov. 4, 2009 at age 89. Past member of the NYSE. Husband of the late Donna. Father of Eden Barnes, Megg Hoffman and Robert C. Jr. Brother of Doris McKeon and the late Henry Picoli Jr. Grandfather of seven and great-grandfather of two. Arrangements entrusted to Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home, Glen Cove. A graveside service was held privately at Locust Valley Cemetery. Jessie Mae Carpenter, formerly of Glen Cove, died on Nov. 3, 2009 at age 94 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Syracuse. Born in 1915 in Aiken, SC, she moved to Glen Cove, NY in 1930 where she raised two daughters, was a self-employed beautician for 57 years and spent most of her life in service to others, before relocating to Liverpool, NY, in 2005.
Jessie was predeceased by her husband Whitfield Carpenter and daughter Doris James. She is survived by a daughter, Janet Grant (Syracuse); and grandchildren, Robin Grant and Sheila Grant (Syracuse), Cheryl Grant and Gary Grant both residing in Glen Cove, Phyllis Hefner and a son-in-law, Dennis Hefner also residing in Syracuse, Fred James Jr. (California), Franklin James (Huntington Station), Kathleen Gad, Deborah James, Michele James and Carolyn James, all residing in Georgia, and Scott James who resides in Dix Hills. She also has 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grands.
Arthur E. Sweid, formerly of Glen Cove, died on Oct. 24 in Richmond, VA. He was the executive director of Glen Cove’s Community Development Agency in the 1970s and ‘80s, retiring in 1985. Beloved husband of Pat, and father of Eric (Carol), Nancy Henderson (Glenn) and Michael (Theresa) and grandfather of Daniel and Zachary.
Allen Gardner Weise died on Oct. 17, 2009 in Glen Cove Hospital of respiratory failure. He was 86. Allen was born on April 2, 1923 in Washington, DC. He lived there until after WWII.
Allen enlisted in the Navy and served as a lieutenant j.g. in the Pacific on mine sweepers for three years. After discharge from the Navy in 1946 he returned to George Washington University, where he was a chemistry major, to complete his BS degree. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
Richard P. Deegan, of Sea Cliff, died on Nov. 2, 2009. Founder of Richard P. Deegan & Son Plumbing, he was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII. He was past president of the Joint Board of Plumbing Examiners of Nassau County, past president of the Glen Head Rotary and a former trustee of the Village of Sea Cliff. Husband of the late Helen (nee Yoniak). Father of Helen Wareham (Tom), Eileen Krieb (Larry), Tricia Scott (Richard) and the late Paul (Patricia). Grandfather of Thomas, Kathleen, Kristine, Colleen, Nicole, Becky, Bryan, Kellie, Christopher and Megan. Great-grandfather of Luke. Brother of Francis (Nancy) and the late George (Janice). Visiting 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Whitting Funeral Home, 300 Glen Cove Ave., Glen Head. Funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. Friday at St. Boniface Martyr Church, Sea Cliff. Ruth Marie Pecan, 89, of West End, NC, passed away peacefully on Nov, 1, 2009 at home. Her husband, Walter H. Pecan, preceded her in death in 1965. She is survived by her daughter Ruth Stolting and son-in-law Robert Stolting of West End as well as her brother August Zoll of Cedar Grove, NJ.
Ruth Pecan was born Dec. 8, 1919 in Brooklyn. She received a bachelor’s degree from Wagner College in Staten Island. She then attended and graduated from Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School. She worked at Chase Manhattan Bank in Manhattan until her marriage on June 3, 1945. Interested also in the field of nursing, she worked tirelessly as a homemaker and caregiver to members of her family.
John Patrick Hoban, of Glen Cove, died on Oct. 27, 2009. Husband of Eleanor. Father of Donna, James Newman, Barbara, Kathleen, Deirdre, Colleen and John. Grandfather of 20. Arrangements were made by the McLaughlin Kramer Megiel Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Funeral Mass at the Church of St. Patrick.
