Frederick B. Spencer passed away peacefully on May 4, 2009 in Rexford, NY, at the age 92. Fred is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Kathleen (Kay); two children, Gail Chase (Larry) and Frederick Jr. (Darlene); and four grandchildren. He was born and raised in Brooklyn’s Park Slope, served in WWII with the Army Air Corps, then moved to Glen Head (and later Old Brookville) to raise his family. He worked as a stock specialist and owned a seat on the American Stock Exchange. He retired in 1979 and moved to Whispering Pines, NC, where he and Kay spent 25 active, healthy, and happy years. His final years were spent in upstate New York. Like his father, he loved the ocean and golf, which he continued to play up to age 91. He will be interred in Brooklyn’s Greenwood Cemetery at a later date.
At 92, Marion “Tess” Teslik was an independent, quick-witted, working woman with a flair for fashion.
Growing up in Jamaica, Queens, Ms. Teslik attended finishing school after her high school days and later enrolled at Fordham University.
She attended three years of college before meeting her husband, Alexander, Jr., while on a train traveling between New York and Connecticut. They later married and Ms. Teslik, an only child, went on to have three children, Alexander, Steven and Melanie.
Gregg T. Schmitt
Gregg T. Schmitt, of Phoenix, A, formerly of Glen Cove, died suddenly on April 23, 2009. Son of the late Dr. William F. and Yvonne Schmitt. Brother of Richard, Daniel, Jeanmarie, Lisa, and Karen. Gregg graduated from Glen Cove High School in 1974 and in 1985 received a BA in visual arts from Old Westbury College. In 1991 he graduated with a master of fine arts from C.W. Post. He student taught at C.W. Post and participated in many art shows on Long Island. Interment will be at Mount St. Mary Cemetery, Flushing.
Samuel J. Barr, Jr.
Samuel J. Barr, Jr., 91 years old, died peacefully at home on June 24, 2009 in Marion, MA. Born Sept. 3, 1917 in Jersey City, NJ, he was the son of Margaret and Samuel Barr. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and also served in the Korean Conflict. He began his professional career as a systems administrator installing and maintaining the first computer system for American Broadcasting Company in New York City. He served as comptroller of Queens College until his retirement in 1974.
William Francis King
William Francis King, formerly of Glen Cove, passed away June 29, 2009 in his home in New Port Richey, FL, at 77 years of age. He leaves behind his wife Deborah Kwaak King; his brother Robert King (Patricia); his sister Mary Clark (George); his three children, William M. King (Dawn), Florence Nowlin (James) and Ina Simeone (Thomas); his former wife and friend Ina Nodine; nine grandchildren, William, Robert and Samantha King, Thomas (Serena), Travis and Tyler Baar, Ashley, Nichole and Timothy Simeone; and three great-grandchildren, Kenyon, Riley and Trinity Baar; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother John King.
Birdhouse Bill as he’s known to his many friends was a carpenter by trade. When he retired he could never stop building so the houses just got smaller. He could always be found building birdhouses, fishing, or socializing with friends.
We all love him and will miss him dearly.
Helen Kotowski, of Glen Head, died on June 28, 2009. Wife of the late Stanley. Mother of Frances (James) Kuskowski and Louise (Daniel) Capobianco. Grandmother of Karen, James, Tina, Tara and Daniel. Alvira T. Sprague
Alvira T. Sprague, formerly of Locust Valley and Glen Cove. Widow of the late Walter R. Sprague, she died very peacefully and joined him on June 26, 2009. The family believes she may have been the oldest living Girl Scout, joining in 1920 and achieving Golden Eaglette in 1928. She would have been 103 years old on Aug. 21. She is survived by son Richard, daughter Dr. Carol Savage, and Steven; grandchildren. Richie, 1st Lt. Carolyn and 1st Lt. Michael Blue, Matthew, Lcpl. Margaret R. Retoske, of Glen Cove, died on June 21, 2009. She was a former G.C.P.D. school crossing guard for 24 years, former vice president of the Lioness Club of Glen Cove. Wife of Robert P.
