Professor Vera von Wiren- Garczynski died suddenly in Glen Cove on Saturday, August 3, 2013, after two massive strokes. She was born in Novi Sad, Yugoslavia, and was placed in a Nazi detention camp during WWII, when the Nazis invaded that country. After being released by the American forces, she met Stanley Garczynski, a polish officer who was also freed by the Americans after being imprisoned in the Nazi concentration camp, Auschwitz. They married in Munich, and she gave birth to her daughter Maria. The teenage bride and her husband immigrated to America via Ellis Island with her mother, Helen and their infant daughter. Soon after, she had two more children, Barbara and Waldemar.
Before obtaining her doctorate, she worked as a model for Oleg Cassini, taught dance at Arthur Murray and acted as interpreter during the Khruschev visit to New York. She tutored Van Cliburn in the Russian language at Carnegie Hall before his 1959 award winning performance in Moscow. In 1961, after graduating from Brooklyn College, and while working on her graduate studies, she gave birth to her son Robert. Soon afterwards, she received her Masters degree from Columbia University, and her doctorate in Russian Area
Studies from NYU. She taught Russian language and literature at the CUNY, and was a visiting scholar at the School for International Affairs at Columbia University.

Michael E. Stannish of Setauket, formerly Greenpoint. Michael was a lovable, happy person. A big NY Met and NY Giant fan. His staple meal was always ham and Swiss with potato salad. Charlotte Gale of Glen Cove, died on July 24,2013. Age 92. Wife of the late Dr. Robert Gale D.D.S. Mother of Douglas and June Bardi (Luciano). Grandmother of Robert and Andrea. Former member of Glen Cove Woman’s Club. Volunteered at Glen Cove Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and also was active in the 1950s-1960s with the Cerebral palsy Association. Private service to be held. Leo Israel, 90, passed away July 26, 2013 peacefully in his home, after suffering a long illness. His wife of 67 years, Deborah Israel was at his side. Leo Israel was a long time resident of Glen Cove and a founding member of North Country Reform Temple.
Israel, CPA, was the former Commissioner of Finance in Glen Cove from 1976-1980. He was also involved in various City Council positions during his 57 years living on Henry Drive in Glen Cove.
Kevin Barry McCabe of East Northport, formerly of Glen Cove, died on July 24, 2013. Devoted son of the late Peter and Mary. Dear brother of James (Sophie), Bernard (Virginia), Thomas (Sue), Peter (Lidiya) and the late Mary (John) Fiederlein. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Kevin served in the 82nd Airborne. Religious services were held at the McLaughlin Kramer Megiel Funeral Home. Interment Calverton National Cemetery.
Angelo Christon of Glen Cove died on July 18, 2013 at age 90. Beloved husband of Anna. Loving father of Gheri Kaufman (Stephen). Dear brother of Anne Delos. Dorothy Marie Sprague in her 93rd year formerly of Sea Cliff and Phoenix, AZ passed on Saturday, July 13, 2013. Pre-deceased by her husband of 69 years, the love of her life, Arthur (Artie). Well known lifelong resident of Sea Cliff, member of Sea Cliff Methodist Church, Church Secretary for Rev. York, member of The Golden Ring, and employee of The North Shore School District, Guidance Department. As well as a loving wife, she was our role model as the most caring, devoted woman to her children, Dorothy Lamb (Barry,pre-deceased), Betty Harnage (Arroll), Arthur/ Buzz (Freda), grandchildren, James Lamb, Robert Lamb (Amy), Kathleen Reilly (John) Gary Harnage, Susan Harnage, William Harnage (Ann), Brian, Mark, Kaitlin and Leah Sprague.
