Obituary: Ora P. Waller

Ora P. Waller

Ora P. Waller was born Oct. 14, 1942 in Virginia to the late Harry B. Waller and Lula B. Hill. She was their firstborn and the apple of their eye. Harry wanted a boy so he proceeded to teach Ora how to do boy things, but Lula, being the lady that she was, continued to thwart that with girly things. Harry and Lula left Virginia when Ora was about three years old and came to Glen Cove, a quaint little town that reminded them of home, and they settled there. Ora being the eldest of five children had much responsibility place upon her. By nature she automatically became a second mother to her siblings.

Ora received her education through the Glen Cove School system and she was a grade A student. Ora loved to sing and had many singing groups and performed at the Apollo Theatre with her group called the Dollettes and came in first place.

Ora gave birth to one child, a daughter; Jasmine S. Thompson, whose father is James O. Thompson. Although she only had one child she was a mother to many. Ora would pick up many of Jasmine’s classmates and drop them off to school with Jasmine.

She worked for ElectroSpace, P.R.D. Electronics and her last place of employment was Sperry Electronics when she began to have difficulty walking, which was the beginning of her illness.

Ora departed this life on June 14, 2009 comfortably at home, with her siblings at her side. She was predeceased by her youngest sister Linda Waller Berry. She leaves to mourn her daughter Jasmine S. Thompson; brothers, Harry B. Waller Jr. and Robert E. Waller; sister Dolores Waller; one brother-in-law Solomon Berry; two nieces, Mingyon C. Waller and Michelle P. Seaman; one nephew Solomon Berry Jr.; one great-nephew Charles Hackley Jr.; one great-niece Marina Vasquez; two aunts, Elizabeth Hill and Nabatha Waller; one uncle James Hill; life friend James Thompson; and a host of family and friends. Visiting 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 19 at the First Baptist Church of Glen Cove, with a funeral service to follow at 8 p.m. Burial will be Saturday morning at the Roslyn Cemetery, Roslyn.
