Obituary: Daniel A. Casey

Daniel A. Casey, a lifelong resident of Locust Valley, died on May 6, 2013 at the age of 83. 

 

He retired in 1989 as an accounting manager for Verizon after a 40-year career with the company. In 1963 he was appointed to the Town of Oyster Bay Zoning Board of Appeals and was chairman at the time of his retirement.

 

He was drafted into the US Army in 1951 and served in the Korean War.  He was in the Signal Corps, establishing telephone communications beyond enemy lines. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his heroic and meritorious service.

 

Civic and religious organizations were a big part of his life.  He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Oyster Bay Council, served as an usher for forty years at the Church of St. Patrick, Glen Cove, and was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

 

Dan was an active member of the Howard A. Van Wagner Post 962 American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, James Donahue Post 347.  He was an honoree of the Glen Cove Memorial Day Parade in 2011. 

 

He was a long time Committeeman and served as president of the Locust Valley Republican Club in 1971.

 

After joining the Locust Valley Fire Department in 1947, he soon became 2nd Lieutenant and eventually Captain of the Hook and Ladder Company. He served as their treasurer for many years.  This past November Dan celebrated 65 years with the Department.  Dan was a Commissioner for the Locust Valley Fire District from 1965 to 1974. 

 

In 2009 The Locust Valley Rotary Club presented him with their highest award, the Paul Harris Medallion for his service to the community.

 

Dan was the beloved husband of Margaret (O’Donnell) for 54 years.  Loving father of Patricia Jagenburg (Greg), Margie Whitting (Codge) and the late Mary Jane.  Cherished grandfather of Makayla, Katelyn, Caitlin and Sarah.  Dear brother of Eileen and the late Jack and James.  

 

Funeral Mass was Saturday, May 11, 2013 at St. Boniface Martyr Church, Sea Cliff and interment at Locust Valley Cemetery.
