James D. Doran of Glen Cove passed away at Glen Cove Hospital on June 9, 2014 at the age of 86. Jim Doran was born on July 3, 1927 in New York City and moved to Glen Cove when he was 5 years old. He left Glen Cove High School and volunteered to serve in the United States Navy during World War II and returned to the U.S. when the war ended.
In 1948, Jim re-enlisted in the Navy and was assigned to a large aircraft carrier; the USS Kearsage, which was the flagship of the fleet. He also served on the Juneau during Korean War and returned to the U.S. in late 1951, again receiving an honorable discharge.
In 2007, the City of Glen Cove named Jim Doran as the Veteran’s Day Honoree. During a ceremony on Nov. 11, 2007, in front of the Doughboy Monument, Mayor Ralph V. Suozzi thanked Jim and all the nation’s veterans for their service to their country.
Jim was an active member of VFW Post 347 in Glen Cove.
Jim is survived by Barbara, his wife of 59 years, and four children: James Doran; Joseph Doran and life partner Steven Donato; Adele Horbatiuk and husband Steven; and John Doran and wife Andrea; and two grandchildren, Gregory and Olivia Horbatiuk. Jim also leaves behind sisters Barbara Doran and Rosemary Huggins, and the late Joseph Doran, Margaret (Sis) Cekala and George Doran.
Visitations were held at Dodge Thomas Funeral Home on June 12, 2014, and the Funeral Mass was held at St. Hyacinth RC Church on June 13, 2014. Burial with military honors followed at Holy Rood Cemetery.
