Louise Y. Gow, 95, died Thursday, July 24, 2014, at Kendal at Hanover. She was born Jan. 29, 1919, in Tientsin, China, to Molin Li and Ruth Wei. In 1938, she came to the United States to study. She attended Seton Hill College in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. After earning a bachelor degree in 1941, she attended Drew University in Madison, NJ. Further studies were received at Hofstra University, C.W. Post College, and New York University.
She married her childhood friend, Charles C. Gow, on June 6, 1942. She and Charles made their home in Glen Cove and lived there for over 40 years. In 1986, they retired to Vermont and in 2000 moved to Kendal at Hanover.
When her two children were almost grown, she started substitute teaching. She completed her requirements toward teacher certification in New York State. She taught for over 20 years, mostly at the
North Shore Schools of Long Island and spent many of those years teaching at Sea Cliff Elementary School in Sea Cliff.
Throughout her active years, she contributed services to civic, religious and social projects. An avid sports enthusiast, she played volleyball, basketball, tennis, and golf. She gardened in the summer and skied in the winter. For several years she won medals at the Pico Ski area where the 70+ Ski Club has its annual gatherings.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy M. Crabb (Ron) of Madison, WI.; a son, Robert H. Gow (Mary) of Brooklyn, NY; a brother, George M. Li of Rochester, MN; a sister, Margaret Y. Sung (John) of
Gainsville, FL; three grandchildren, Wendy (David Watson), Richard (Adrienne Norton), Joel (Rachel Schalet); six great-grandchildren, Eliana Crabb, Alistair Crabb, Aaron Crabb, Annika Crabb, Clive Watson, Axel Watson.
Memorial services will be held Monday, Aug. 11, at 10 a.m. at Kendal at Hanover in Hanover, NH. Arrangements are by the Day Funeral Home in Randolph, VT.
