Obituary: Clifford N. Davis

Clifford N. Davis

Clifford N. Davis, age 92, died on Feb. 21, 2010 at North Shore/Glen Cove Hospital. He was a Sea Cliff resident since his marriage to Jean Thackeray 66 years ago. One of nine children, Mr. Davis was born in a one-room cabin, a land-grant homestead in Cameron, MT.

A graduate of Boseman’s Montana State University, he was a physicist for Sperry Gyroscope (now part of Unisys) for 30 years, rising to a managerial position. Until his death, he was an active member of the Sea Cliff Beautification Committee. His landscaping and gardening expertise was honed by his 15 years as a volunteer at Westbury Gardens and 10 years at Planting Fields in Oyster Bay. He was a recipient of a Sea Cliff White Cap Award for service to the community that also included a stint as chairman of the planning board under former mayor Edward Stiles, a teacher of bread-baking to the young students at Sea Cliff Elementary School, a board member of Troop 45 of the Boy Scouts of America, and in 1955, of Sea Cliff Little League.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son Gary of Brooklyn; daughter Dorean Langsdon of Paris, France; and grandsons Nicholas Davis and Ian Spencer Langsdon. A memorial gathering for his many friends is planned for the spring. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the American Lung Association National Headquarters, 1301 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Suite 800. Washington, DC 20004.
