Generally speaking, televised debates between local candidates are usually an effective cure for insomnia. Lavine vs. Germino on News12 Long Island was anything but. The exchange was interesting and informative; a must see for interested voters.
The highlight was challenger Germino’s statement referring to the Business Council of New York State Pro-Jobs Voter Guide. The Pro-Jobs Voter Guide scored incumbents in both the state Senate and Assembly on their voting records over the past two years. Apparently the Business Council of New York State has rated incumbent Lavine a flat zero percent for job growth.
As a Long Island professional, I was extremely interested in incumbent Lavine’s response. To my astonishment, Lavine stated that he wore the 0 percent rating as a badge of honor. He cited his concern about the environment and good paying jobs for workers as a justification for the zero percent rating. Germino seemed to indicate that the workers with the good paying jobs that Lavine was referring to are mostly in the Public Sector like the MTA workers and municipal unions he helped subsidize with our tax dollars. Why didn’t Lavine just say “Let Them Eat Cake” to the many unemployed, underemployed workers and the record number of families whose homes are being foreclosed on Long Island?
Lavine’s “in your face” political arrogance and blatant disregard for working people in the private sector is not acceptable from a representative in public service. I’m adding Charles Lavine to my growing list of incumbent politicians that we need to change on Nov. 2.
