Friday, 26 June 2009 07:55The long Glen Cove school board meeting held this week was a relief when it finally ended. It was the last night for board members Doug Brown and Kurt Schmeller, and not a minute too soon. As a final insult to the people of Glen Cove, with only 10 days left in their terms, they exercised their legal right, and voted for things which will cost the taxpayers dearly and unnecessarily. Rather than do the honorable thing and postpone the vote, so that the two new board members, who take office next Wednesday, could make decisions for the entire coming year, they took it upon themselves to do just what they have steadfastly done for the past eight years, and voted for whatever the administration suggests. To quote Gilbert and Sullivan: “I always voted at my party’s call, and I never thought of thinking for myself at all.”
While the three board members, Gail Nedbor-Gross, Ida McQuair and Frank Bouza tried to table the vote until information promised them by Dr. Aronstein was presented, but apparently wasn’t, the “gang of four,” Misters Brown, Schmeller, Sunshine, and Tortorici, voted to further encumber this community with hundreds of thousands of dollars of additional expense by continuing to pay for rent, transportation and salaries to keep the “Alternative High School” off our school grounds. Even one high school student’s excellent suggestions made at the meeting, and to Dr. Aronstein himself previously, could not sway them. Mr. Brown and Mr. Schmeller have sullied their own reputations even further with this final blow.
