Obituary: Gladys G. Ernst

Gladys G. Ernst, 92, a resident at Willow Valley, PA and formerly of Mineola, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at Arbor View at Willow Valley, Lancaster, PA.  She was married to George E. Ernst for over 68 years.  George died on October 16, 2011.

Born March 2, 1920, in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd M. and Amy S. (Thomas) Trafford.

Gladys graduated from Richmond Hill H.S. in 1936 as salutatorian after skipping a grade and as the valedictorian from Scudder Business School, both in New York.  During WWII, she served as the secretary to the president of Macy’s in New York City.  Following the war, she assisted her husband in his home photography business.  Following retirement, Gladys and George retired to Lancaster to watch their grandchildren grow up and immediately became involved in community activities.  She was instrumental in starting the Millersville Council on Aging, which is now the Millersville Senior Center.  She also delivered for over 15 years for MAMOW and was active with the Golden Growth Group and Helping Hands at the First United Methodist Church in Millersville.

She will be lovingly missed by a son, David T. Ernst, husband of Denise, of Syracuse, NY; a daughter, Janet E., wife of Stephen P. Gallion, of Lancaster; three grandchildren, Thomas A. Gallion, husband of Michelle, of Lancaster, Megan E. Guise, wife of Benjamin, of San Luis Obispo, CA and Christopher D. Ernst, of Syracuse, NY and three great grandchildren, Andrew, Dylan and Luke Gallion.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Trafford, a sister, Margaret Juchatz and a great granddaughter, Addison Elizabeth Guise.
