For the past three years many residents of Glen Cove have reached out to me and shared their frustration with having only one choice for a cable provider. Throughout my first and second terms on the City Council, I have consistently argued in favor of allowing and acquiring Verizon FIOS to be a cable option for the residents of Glen Cove. On Tuesday, March 11, the Glen Cove City Council voted 5-2 in favor of approving a Cable Franchise Agreement between the city and Verizon.
I have done my due diligence and taken the time to understand and comprehend the compelling arguments made by both Cablevision and Verizon. However, at the end of the day, my rationale for voting in favor of allowing Verizon FIOS as a franchise can be summed up in one word, choice. I believe that choice for the residents trumps all of the other arguments. My guiding principle is that the people of Glen Cove should have the ability to choose another cable provider if they desire to do so. Furthermore, I believe that the residents will achieve monthly savings as Verizon and Cablevision compete for Glen Cove customers.
For decades, the people of Glen Cove had only one option for cable television. I believe that this vote is a victory for many Glen Cove residents because two choices are better than one.
