141st Running of the Belmont Stakes

On Saturday, June 6, the world’s eyes will once again be on Nassau County, as the 141st running of the Belmont Stakes is held at Belmont Park. Each year, Nassau County benefits as racing fans gather to watch what is known as the “jewel in the Triple Crown,” and at 1 1/2 miles, the Belmont Stakes is also the final and most demanding leg of the Triple Crown.

The Belmont Stakes only adds to our reputation as a renowned equestrian center. In fact, Nassau County has been hosting horse racing events since 1665, when the first formal measure racetrack in North America was built near what is now Garden City.

Belmont Park has always been a source of pride for us here in Nassau County. It has seen some of the most historic moments in racing history. It has also long been considered to be one of the most beautiful tracks and has been referred to as the “Taj Mahal” of all racing. However, some people out there are still under the misconception that Belmont Park is in Queens, when in fact it’s right here in Nassau County – in the heart of Elmont. Nassau County has hosted the Stakes at Belmont Park for more than 100 years, and the race provides the County with a tremendous shot in the arm to our economy. We couldn’t ask for a better start for our summer tourism season.

On the eve of the 2009 Belmont Stakes, I want to remind everyone about all the great activities and top-notch destinations here in Nassau County. If you’ve got it, flaunt it – and we’ve got it right here in Nassau County!

While we won’t be seeing a Triple Crown winner this year, the Belmont Stakes still promises to be an exciting one and I invite everyone to beautiful Belmont Park on Saturday, June 6.
