From the Desk of Dr. Laurence Aronstein Superintendent of GC Schools: March 11, 2010

My Retirement

I am announcing my retirement as your superintendent of schools. I am retiring after 46 years as a professional educator. I will be entering a new phase of my career. I will be working with a leading educational consultant and will be consulting with school districts and school leaders using the knowledge and skills that I have amassed over all of these years.

I take pride in what we have accomplished here in Glen Cove over the last five years. My administrative team and I have made enormous progress in building a strong academic foundation for all of our students and establishing a sound financial base for the school district. We are proud of our legacy, leaving behind a well-trained and knowledgeable staff, and a physical plant that is well on its way to returning to a safe, secure, and attractive environment. I will not enumerate the numerous contributions we have made to this educational community. Those of you who have followed our progress over the years can attest to what has been accomplished. I take great pride in all of these accomplishments.

Five years ago, I came here and I promised you that I would never let you down, and in my heart, I have fulfilled that promise. I have tried to meet all of our challenges in a thoughtful, professional, and dignified manner. I certainly am not perfect; however, I always attempt to put forth my best effort.

Growing up, my parents taught me the value of earning a full day’s pay for a full day’s work. Although there are two years left on my contract, I ask for nothing. As a child when I sought advice from my parents, they would listen attentively and give me their best advice, which was usually filled with great wisdom. They always finished up by saying, “Zie ein mensch.” The best translation I can give you is, “Be a person of character.” I have tried to live my life by being a man of character. I will continue to work on your behalf with the same integrity, commitment and energy as I have for the last five years, right up until my last moment of service to you.

I sincerely appreciate the support, the friendship, and the good will that so many of you have shared with me. I wish you the best as I pass the baton on to whomever will follow me.
