The new Friends Academy Upper School ice hockey team took to the ice on Wednesday, Jan. 25 in Syosset against Birch Wathen Lenox School. They not only made the ice their own – they made history, winning their first game in 21 years.
Friends roared out to a 5-0 lead after the first period. Freshman Perry Gordon (Sands Point) opened the scoring as he slid in a wrist shot from the slot; junior Joseph Macy (Huntington) followed with a high shot from down low. Macy also added a breakaway goal later in the game.
Gordon knocked in one more goal, with sophomore Jack Viener (Upper Brookville) and freshman Struan Coleman (Locust Valley) each contributing a goal.Freshman goalie Harrison Graham (Locust Valley) contributed roughly 15 saves over the course of the game, making key saves at critical times. The Quakers took approximately 25 shots on goal against Birch Wathen.
This is the first time Friends has fielded an Upper School ice hockey team since 1991. An active middle school program, reinstituted in 2008, served as a successful feeder program for this year’s team.
