So far, the Glen Cove “Under 15” rugby team is off to a positive start this season.
“Two wins from two games, but there’s no let-up. We play a New Zealand style of running rugby that the spectators enjoy,” said Coach John Royal of the Glen Cove Under 15 (u15) rugby team.
The team is led by second-year players including halfback Lalo Montecer, flyhalf Josh Martin and center Ralik Jackson, who the coach considers to be top players.
“In rugby circles, we probably have three All American players on our rugby team: Lalo Montecer, Josh Martin and Ralik Jackson,” claimed Royal. He added, “Against the best rugby school in the nation, Ralik Jackson ran in two 40-yard touchdowns. He has size, speed and power, and he has stiff to fend off anyone who gets too close.”
Royal noted that Jackson has five touchdowns from two games and is the leading point scorer in the New York, Connecticut and New Jersey u15 rugby competition.
Other players who have impressed are fullback Hugo Pineda, and outside center Manny Sican and Dejon Taylor. Big Ian Couglin anchored the scrum for Long Island as they ran over Morris, 30 points to 19.
On April 1, the Long Island u15 rugby team will play Greenwich u15 at Robert M. Finley Middle School at 11:45 a.m.
