Playing at Glen Cove Stadium on Sept. 23, the Glen Cove Midget Red team had their first win of the season defeating the Wyandanch Midgets 13-6.
In a hard fought battle, the Midget Red offense led by QB Forrest Demetri scored in the first half with touchdowns by Dominic Genzale and Mario Fischetti. Both running backs worked extremely hard behind a dominating offensive line led by rookie standout Jesse Mayreis and Veteran’s Kevin Napier, Danny and Jimmy Seringer. Gianni Aboulehassan scored an extra point behind his ground-pounding offensive attack at fullback. Veteran running back Peter Rodriquez pounded the Wyandanch defense all game gaining multiple first downs to shut the door on any possible come back by Wyandanch.
The defense led by veteran Jack Alletto was able to hold the Wyandanch offense to only one TD. Middle linebacker, John Mavlios stood his ground ensuring that the running game would not gain any yards up the middle. Defensive lineman, DJ DeChiara helped lead the attack on the d-line with rookie sensation George Panagopoulos.
Philip La Rosa played safety and nearly eliminated any type of passing threat by the opposing team while making key tackles the entire game.
At halftime, the Midget Red cheerleaders put on a great show. The Midget Red Cheer Team is coached by Laura Weimer.
The coaches of the Midget Red Midgets are Jay Genzale and Kevin Napier with assistants Mario Fischetti, Adam Demetri and John Mavlios.
On Sunday, Sept. 30, the Midget Red Cardinals traveled to Wantagh for a game versus Wantagh Gold. The boys played their best.
The offense led by quarterback Forrest Demetri struck first with a long touchdown run by running back Mario Fischetti giving the Cardinals a 6-0 lead. Wantagh fought hard and by halftime they had a 7-6 Wantagh lead. Both teams battled on both sides of the ball while Kevin Napier and Jesse Mayreis led the Cardinals on the offensive and defensive line. Wantagh came back and led the game 14-6. Running back Dominick Genzale ran a 60-yard TD to close the gap to 14-12 Wantagh.
Both teams fought hard as the game went back and forth then Wantagh took to the air and led 21-12. With four minutes left in the fourth quarter, Mario Fischetti, behind a huge block from ground pounding fullback Gianni Abouelhassan, opened up a huge hole for Fischetti to score his second touchdown of the day. As Midget Red was holding Wantagh trying to strip and get the ball back, Wantagh used a new strategy and ran the clock out. The game ended 21-18.
