Congratulations went out to veteran Glen Cove runners John Infranca and Dan Badalament, who both won awards in the Sands Point Preserve 5 Kilometer Sprint for the Feinstein Institute, held on the grounds of the Sands Point preserve on Saturday morning, August 15. A total of 350 runners successfully completed the 5 Kilometer course.
Infranca crossed the finish line in a time of 21 minutes, 20 seconds, earning him the third-place award in the 40-44 age group, and Badalament scored in 24:23 to take top honors in the 65-69 age group.
Race Director Abe Bernstein of the hosting Greater Long Island Running Club went all out to ensure the success of this event, as his way of saying “thank you” to the good people from North Shore-LIJ’s Feinstein Institute who got him back on his feet and back on the roads and track after a bout with Lymphoma. Genentech (“In Business for Life”) signed on as the generous sponsor this year, and participants said their support was most welcome.
A spokesperson said, “Special thanks go to the Friends of the Sands Point Preserve for making the beautiful Sands Point facility available to us, to Preserve Manager Gary Haglich for his enthusiastic cooperation, and to Nassau County Legislator Wayne Wink and North Hempstead Town Clerk Leslie Gross for being on hand to show their support for the event. Leslie successfully completed the course in 47:14. Way to go!”
They added, “This is not a PR course. The trail in the third mile is not easy to navigate and the hill leading up from the trail is particularly nasty!”
Race Director Bernstein said, “Congratulations and thanks to Danny and John and to all my other buddies from Glen Cove and elsewhere for showing up to enjoy a morning of fun and fitness at beautiful Sands Point, and to support my efforts to raise some much needed funds for the Feinstein Institute and the battle against Lymphoma!”
Donations to the Feinstein Institute are still welcome and can be sent c/o Abe Bernstein, 54 Trumbull Road, Manhasset, New York 11030.
