Opening Day Games

Glen Cove Junior Baseball/softball has commenced another year at John Maccarone Memorial Stadium. Opening Day brought out a huge turnout of players, parents and fans of little league baseball/softball despite a cool, cloudy day and a number of the fields unplayable. Below are the first results that are being reported this season:

Midget Boys

Ian Cukro went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored as Ryan Annuziato was 2-for-3 with a long homerun and two RBI as the Durham Bulls made a valiant effort in a losing cause, 8-6, against the Bees. Vincent Milano was 1-for-3.

Intermediate Boys

Will Merk set the tome with three solid pitched innings of one-run ball in the Yankees 5-2 victory over the Diamondbacks. Anthony DiLeo broke a 2-2 tie open in the fifth with a three-run homer. The Yankees scored all five runs in that inning with sacrifice hits from Gabe Const and Matthew Smalls.

Intermediate Girls

The Islandia School Supply Mets are off to a hot start going 3-0 in their first three season games. For the season opener, Reed Weimer (double) and Emma Burke batted 4-for-4 and Caroline Baptista was 3-for-4 in a 22-16 win over the Ateco A’s. Jennifer Heman hurled three solid innings with Baptista as the starter and Brianna Malvino as the closer. Mia Martinez made a fine sparking defensive play. For the second game against Oyster Bay Miami in a 20-5 romp, the defensive stars were Weimer and Gianna Stanco. Julia Pascucci-Jiao made her catching debut as Jessica Ninesling, Malvino and Jennifer LaRocca were the Mets’ batting stars. Ninesling was the starting hurler, Malvino pitched in middle relief and Heman was the closer. Gianna Palmo was spectacular on the base paths for the Mets. In the third game, the Mets had been ahead by two runs in top of the seventh and final inning when the Oyster Bay Florida team scored three runs and forced the Mets to come to the plate. With two outs, bases loaded and a 15-15 tie, Gianna Stanco got hit by a pitch, forcing in Mia Martinez to win the game. Heman was 2-for-2 with a double. Stanco, Malvino and Ninesling made defensive plays to keep the game within reach.
