The North Shore Varsity Football team kicked-off the season with a 35-7 victory over the Rams of West Hempstead. The Vikings were led by team captains Billy Johansen, Lou Mastellone, Evan Vandoros, and Danny Broker.
The Vikings opened the scoring when quarterback Denis Hickey connected with Matt Cunningham on a 7-yard touchdown pass. Hickey then connected with Stefan Schwartz for a 33-yard TD pass, capitalizing on a Vandaros fumble recovery the play before. The Vikings next score came when defensive lineman Anthony Croce intercepted a Rams screen pass on sprinted 50 yards for the score. Hickey would then take a quarterback keeper around the edge for a 9-yard score. The Vikings final score came when Billy Johansen barreled his way for a 10-yard run into the end-zone.
The Vikings defense overpowered the Rams causing 5 turnovers including interceptions from Johansen who had 2, Croce, and Adam Volpe. Evan Vandaros also had a fumble recovery. Vikings kicker John Scuderi was a perfect 5-5 kicking extra points.
The North Shore Field Hockey Team is looking forward to an exciting season. The Vikings finished their 2008 season in the Class B County Semi-Finals. The team is returning 14 varsity players from the 2008 season including three seniors, six juniors and five sophomores; nine of the returning players are 2008 starters. Juniors Christina DeMeo, Maddison Pappas, and Tracy Doherty have joined the 2009 team and are looking to contribute in the defensive end. Seniors Elle Hoffman and Kathleen Lennon will lead the midfield, while senior Melissa Meehan will lead the attack. Joining Melissa on attack will be Jennie Berglin, Arianna Pappas, Jenna Datlo, Isabella Ahrens and Micaela Dussel. Dussel will also see time in the midfield alongside Amanda Juhasz and Ashley Janelli. Danielle Valasiadis returns to the back field where she dominates the right side. Sophomore forward Laura Wefer will join Danielle as a defender in the 2009 season along with Lyndsay Ahrens. Lauren Gerard will take the field as goalkeeper and a first year starter for the Vikings.
The Vikings reloading! The top of the line-up remains intact with eighth-graders Claudia Ruiz and Sunaina Vohra returning for their second year of high School tennis. The year of experience will only help these two athletes as they attempt to conquer the best each team has to offer at first and second singles. Senior, Aria Shavelson, earned the third singles spot after a fierce competition in preseason with four of her fellow teammates. Her steady groundstrokes kept Aria in every match and hopefully will contribute to her success on the court.
As of Friday, doubles teams were still being determined. The Vikings will rely on the experience of Caroline Maramara, Alexis McCabe, Anna Berger, and Marisa Moshell, starters from last years squad. Liz Hamberger, Jen Cisternas, Abby Schubach, Carla Sabbatini, and Kathryn Kaufman will contribute to their new roles as starters for this year’s tennis team. Rachel Weissman, with an ankle injury, is sidelined for the beginning of the season. This week the Lady Vikings host Manhasset on Thursday, Sept. 17.
