Sal Farruggia, founder of LI Kick, Glen Cove’s co-ed adult kickball league, “can’t stop thinking about kickball” and apparently neither can the league’s devoted members.
With a successful fall season behind them, more than 100 players gathered on Saturday, Nov. 16, to battle it out on the John Maccarone Memorial Stadium playing fields in the first annual Kickball Turkey Bowl. The all-day event drew players from existing teams as well as those trying their luck at kickball for the first time. Even some of the referees, who are usually in the fields making the calls, got a chance to play.
“The weather was awesome,” said Farruggia, “and the day was so much fun.”
A huge trophy was awarded to the winning team. The Phillys and Cream hamburger stand gave players coupons toward lunch and the Kornerstone Pub sponsored a well-attended after game party that lasted for hours.
Enrollment for the spring league begins in January, but Kickball devotees will not have to wait until then to get their kickball fix. Farruggia’s next project: an indoor kickball league which will run for seven weeks this winter.
LI Kick has entered into an agreement with the Glen Cove Boys and Girls Club to rent their gymnasium for the winter league.
“This will be a unique twist on kickball,” Farruggia said. “Since it is indoors in a gym, nothing will be out of bounds. The ball can bounce off the ceilings, the walls, basically anything. I think it will be a lot of silly fun.”
Due to the size of the indoor space, games will be played six-on-six and total enrollment will be limited to about 50 players.
Enrollment for the outdoor spring league begins in January when LI Kick will again be partnering with the City of Glen Cove’s Department of Parks and Recreation. There will be two separate leagues this spring, one playing on Tuesday nights and one playing on Thursdays. Spring registration can be done through LI Kick or by calling the Department of Parks and Recreation at 516-676-3766. All teams are co-ed. Players must be at least 20 years of age, but there is no upper age limit on the fun.
