Big Red Wrestlers Scoring Wins!

The Glen Cove High School Wrestling Team has been building off early season success. The JV team continues to develop into a strong unit. First-year freshmen Jerry Ho and Dane Caufield earned their first victories of their careers in December. Freshman Chris Klimaszewski earned three wins over the break. Brian Pattison, JP Benitez, Jakub Micko and Robbie Krisch continue to pick up pins. Andrew Gescedi and Erik Dillon picked up wins at the Big Red Challenge. Harrison Smith continues to dominate the mats.

The varsity won both ends of a double duel, featuring a win over Calhoun HS. Charlie Guastella and Mario Serrano picked up the most important wins of their young careers. Sophomore Nick McAdams also had a big 10-0 decision. In the Big Red Challenge, Ricky Liang picked up three wins all by pins as he scored 20 points for Glen Cove.

The Glen Cove Holiday Tournament was a huge success. The team would like to thank the Booster Club, Linda Perlman, Chris Barry and all of the parents, students and staff who helped make the tournament one of the big events in the Glen Cove winter season. Kevin Nicholas won three bouts to place fifth. Alex Johnson defeated teammate Gorov Sodhi in a close match as the two wrestlers took fifth and sixth. Mike Iannetta took first place in his second straight tournament as did Sasha Bogdanich. Dan Belfiore scored a last-second takedown to win his second straight tournament as well.

Next up the team competed in the Locust Valley Tournament. Derek Shearer, Rahul Nath, Alex Johnson and Kevin Nicholas each had wins for Glen Cove. Junior Aaron Sylver continues to develop as he placed third in his third straight tournament.

Glen Cove sent seven wrestlers to the finals. Junior Alexey Bogdanich won a tough early round match to make it to the finals. Lewis Linares had an impressive win in the semifinals with a lateral drop. Julio Bonilla made it to the finals for the first time with a semifinal pin. Mike Iannetta lost a 4-3 decision over the tournaments outstanding wrestler Northport’s Joe Evangalista, for a solid second-place finish. Sasha Bogdanich earned his third straight tournament championship with a 1-0 victory over Tom Lamaida from Herricks and a 3-1 victory over Donavan Devaney of Northport. Danny Belfiore beat Lewis Linares for the championship in the 285 pound weight class. Hector Paez won his first tournament of the season with a 3-1 victory over Joe Rodriguez of Herricks.

With Piero Dilorenzo returning soon, the team looks to get stronger for the qualifiers and counties. “Great job and good luck,” said Coaches Kociend, Kopecky and MacDonald.
