After culminating, a successful season with a 9-1 record and second place in Nassau County's Conference II, as well as the highest team total average, 135.7, in Conference II, the Great Neck South High School Rebel girls gymnastics team had three representatives-sophomore Beth Wecksell, freshman Sarah Cardell, and the captain, senior Karen Siegel-at the Nassau County individual gymnastics championships. The Great Neck North Blazers also had one representative, junior Sarah Aviram. All four Great Neck gymnasts triumphed at this meet on Feb. 12 at Wantagh High School.

While the Nassau coaches invitational meet had competitors chosen by the team's coaches, the county individual championships featured the highest scoring gymnasts from Nassau County's high schools and clubs. Club gymnasts, who practice longer hours than those just on high school teams, were ranked separately from high school gymnasts. Wecksell, Cardell, Siegel, and Aviram were all in the high school division.

Wecksell achieved a score of 7.65 on vault, in a tie for seventh place out of twelve high school gymnasts. She also attained seventh place on floor with a score of 8.15

On the uneven bars, Cardell garnered fifth place with 6.65.

Siegel obtained a score of 7.95 on balance beam, worthy of seventh place.

Aviram won second place on balance beam with 8.35, seventh on floor with 8.15 in a tie with Wecksell, and a score of 7.6 on vault.

The Rebels' coach Debbie Emmerich was "excited" with their success, and "happy that the two alternates (Wecksell on floor and Siegel on beam) got in. We had a girl represented on each event.Everyone worked so hard, and we got better and better as the season went on."

For fun, Emmerich gave out awards to the Rebel gymnasts. Sophomore Patti Hong received awards for most improved vault and most improved floor, freshman Michelle Serpas obtained most improved beam, and sophomore Christine Fahey got most improved bars. Siegel acquired awards for spirit, team player and sportsmanship. Sophomore Tracy Gertler attained awards for effort and dedication.

In March, the Nassau County coaches will be voting on having three conferences instead of two next year. If the proposal passes, the Rebels will be ranked in Conference Ii of three.

Congratulations to the Rebels and the Blazers on triumphant season!
