The indoor track and field team continued to roll this past weekend with a fifth place finish at the Seton Hall Invitational. Senior Dave Snelling broke the academy record in the 400 meters and qualified for the ECAC Division III Championships in a time of 51.61. The former record was set five years ago by Kevin Brughell (51.84). In the same event, Scott Sleeper was also an ECAC qualifier with a time of 52.28, his career-best. Snelling and Sleeper combined with Wayne Allen and Nick Gagliardo in the 1600-meter relay. The team finished in a time of 3:28.72, the second best indoor relay time in academy history. The race was good enough for fourth place overall at Seton Hall. Gagliardo placed fifth in the 500 meters as well (1:09). Tim Zink and Will Nabach finished sixth and seventh in the 3000 meters with times of 9:24 and 9:29 respectively.

Freshman Levi Nunley turned in the Mariners' top field performance in the long jump. He placed second with a leap of 20'6". Mike Messenger finished fourth in both the 35 pound weight throw (37'6") and in the shot put (40'). Dan Jones was sixth in the shot put with a toss of 38'6".

To date, the indoor track team has qualified more athletes to complete in the ECAC Championships than in the history of the program. The following Mariners' have already qualified for the ECAC meet that will be held March 7 at Wheaton College: Wayne Allen (55 meters and 200 meters), Matt Holland (Pole Vault), Bill O'Connor (55 hurdles), Scott Sleeper (400 meters), and Dave Snelling (55 hurdles and 400 meters).

Freshman swimmer James Hogan set a new academy record, bettered an academy record that he set last week, and knocked nine seconds off of his NCAA Division III qualifying time this weekend at the ECAC championships held at Gloucester Community College. On Feb. 22, Hogan was named the Metropolitan Conference Most Outstanding Freshman after winning the 1650 freestyle in a time of 16:30.76 which qualified him for the ECAC Championships and the NCAA Division III Championships in a "B" cut time. When choosing swimmers to complete the field of 22 at Nationals, swimmers with "A" cut times are taken first, "B" cut swimmers are then used to fill the field. The last Kings Point swimmer to make a "B" cut time was David Berault, who qualified two years ago in the backstroke, however, he was not selected to attend the National Competition as the cut-off time was faster than he swam. Prior to that, the Mariners have not had a qualifier or a swimmer go to Nationals since Athletic Director Susan Petersen Lubow was the head coach in the 1980's.

This past weekend, Hogan went to the ECAC Championships as the lone representative of Kings Point. He knocked an incredible nine seconds off of his 1650 time and touched the wall in 16.21.82. This time has drastically improved his chances to make the field of 22 at Nationals. At last year's 1650 at Nationals, the last swimmer to fill the field was four seconds faster than Hogan's new time, but five seconds slower than his last time. Hogan's 1650 time also re-set the academy record that he established in the event last week. Later in the ECAC meet, Hogan swam the 1000-meter event as well and set another academy record with a time of 9:53.54.

The men's volleyball team beat Lehman and lost to Stevens Tech and Jersey City State this past week. On Feb. 24, the Mariners lost a close five-game match to Jersey City State 2-3 (6-15, 15-13, 15-10, 11-15, 7-15) on the road. Junior captain Jason Schreier had 26 kills, 15 blocks, and 21 digs. Bob Gang had 16 kills, 10 blocks, and 29 digs. Freshman setter Paul Arthur added 53 assists, 10 blocks, and 10 digs. This past weekend at a dual meet at Lehman, the Mariners defeated Lehman 3-1 (15-7, 8-15, 15-11, 15-11) and lost to Stevens Tech 3-1 (7-15, 15-4, 12-15, 10-15). After Saturday's split, the Blue and Gray's record stands at 12-11 overall and 7-4 in the NECVA. In the victory over Lehman, Paul Arthur had 41 assists, Bob Gang had 12 kills and 15 blocks, and Jason Schreier added 11 kills and 15 blocks. In the second match of the tri-match, Arthur again had 41 assists. Gang added 14 kills, 19 digs, and 17 blocks. Schreier came up big with 13 kills, 21 digs, and 16 blocks. Senior Chris Kopeck contributed five kills, 10 digs and 16 blocks.

Last Wednesday, Paul Arthur was named NECVA Rookie of the Week for the second time this season. In a 3-3 week, Arthur set 241 assists for a 10.95 assists per game average. On the defensive front, he had 81 digs for a 3.68 digs per game average and 36 blocks.

Several Mariners have played well enough this season to place them in the top 15 of the NCAA Division III Statistical Leaders. Jason Schreier is number one in Division III with 166 total blocks (82 more than the highest ranking non-USMMA player) for a 2.52 block average. Bob Gang is second in total blocks, but fifth in blocking average, while Paul Arthur is sixth in blocking average with 1.39. Schreier also ranks 10th in Hitting Percentage (.358) and Dig average (3.00) and 12th in kill average with 3.59 kpg. Gang ranks sixth with a 3.45 digs per game average and 14th with a .351 hitting percentage. The team is ranked seventh with a .263 team hitting percentage.
