Great Neck will receive a special Fourth of July gift this year---a new director for the Great Neck Library. Christine T. Salita will assume the post of library director on July 6.

We welcome a new library director. Our library needs a strong, wise leader. While it is the task of the library's board of trustees to develop policies for the library, it is the job of the library director to administer these policies, to lead the library through day-to-day business, to ensure that this ''jewel'' in our midst remains a pride to our community.

Ms. Salita comes to Great Neck with an impressive resume, even having experience with other multi-branch libraries. She has done much for other libraries that she has headed, and we are told that she is known for her expertise as a conciliator and a facilitator. It seems as if Christine Salita is ''just what the doctor ordered.''

We were delighted to learn that Ms. Salita's appointment was a unanimous decision of both the search committee and the board of trustees. It is our great hope that she will be able to see the board of trustees through many future unanimous decisions.
