Aubrey Shatter, 89, died on July 5, 1998. Born in Brooklyn he was an English teacher and a member of the NYC Board of Education. Father of Susan Shatter and Ellen Shatter. Grandfather of Scott Brown. Brother of Edith Perlo. Friend of Frances Lyons. Arrangements were made by the Riverside-Nassau North Chapels, Great Neck. A memorial service was held on July 14.
Lewis Thaddeous Hirst, a lifetime resident of Great Neck, died on July 9, 1998 at the North Shore Extended Care Facilities. He was a decorated WWII staff sergeant, served in the 399th Infantry 100th Division from 1942 to 1946. He received the Bronze Star, Good Conduct medal and a variety of campaign ribbons. He was a lifetime member of the Society of the 100th "sons of Bitche," Lorraine, France, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #372 and American Legion Post #160.
Like his father, John, and his brother, Edward, Mr. Hirst became a member of the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire District. He was appointed to Company #4 on Northern Blvd. in March 1947. For 51 years he was an active member, progressing through the ranks up to chief from 1964 through 1966. He continued as captain of the police unit and was a fire inspector.
April 19, 1997 was declared a day of special recognition throughout the Town of North Hempstead in his honor. County Executive Thomas S. Gulotta awarded Lewis Hirst the NC Firematics Service Award.
Mr. Hirst began work at the Belgrave Water Pollution Control in Great Neck in 1951 and became superintendent in 1975. He retired in 1988. He served as director of the Water Environment Federation from 1961 to 1965.
He is survived by his sister, Jeanne Hirst Kirkman; her husband Frank L. Kirkman; sisters-in-law Mrs. Howard Hirst and Mrs. Edward Hirst; and 14 nieces and nephews. Arrangements were made by the Doyle B. Shaffer Funeral Home, Little Neck. The funeral service was officiated by the the Rev. Warren Darnell, a lifetime friend of the family, on July 13. Interment All Saints Cemetery.
Silvio A. Miletta, of Great Neck, died on July 13, 1998 at North Shore University Hospital at Manhasset of cancer. He was 72. He retired in 1996 and was pursuing his interest in quantum physics and mathematics. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Maureen M.; two daughters, Alexandra and Jennifer; a sister Paola Miletta; sister-in-law Helen McCann; and his son-in-law David Adams. He is remembered by his friends and family for his gentle, loving and generous spirit, love of ideas and intellectual curiosity and the joy that he brought to all who knew him. Arrangements were made by Fairchild Sons Funeral Home, Manhasset. Mass will be celebrated at St. Aloysius Church, 592 Middle Neck Rd. at 11 a.m.
Muriel Spear Yusen, a lifelong resident of Great Neck, passed away at Calvary Hospital on July 12, 1998 of breast cancer at the age of 69. She attended Kensington School, graduated from Friends Academy in Locust Valley and was a student at Syracuse University.
She devoted a great deal of time to community service. Her family were founding members of Temple Beth-El where she was the immediate past co-president of the Sisterhood. A dedicated volunteer at the North Shore University Hospital for 25 years, she served a number of terms as treasurer of the hospital auxiliary. Muriel also served as vice president of the Lions Club of Great Neck.
In addition to her civic pursuits, she enjoyed reading, traveling and spending time with her family and friends. She was an elegant and gracious lady, beloved by all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband Henry; son Andrew and daughter-in-law Darlene of Portsmouth, RI; daughter Susan Perry and son-in-law Jay of Maplewood, NJ; and three grandsons, Max Perry, Matthew and Kyle Yusen.
Services were held at Temple Beth-El of Great Neck on July 14. Intemrent was at Mount Lebanon Cemetery.
