The Great Neck Public Schools' board of education recently elected Judi Bosworth president and Lawrence Gross vice president. While we wish Ms. Bosworth and Mr. Gross the very best, we would also like to take this time to thank outgoing president Mona Fuchs for the tremendous job she has done these past three years as president.

Three years ago, when Mona Fuchs became president of the board of education, she spoke of the importance of a bond issue, of raising such funds for necessary work, for expansion, within the school district. And, during her three terms in office, she led the board through the bond issue development, through the hearings, through the successful public referendum. Soon this bond issue work will begin, to benefit our children.

During her tenure as president, Ms. Fuchs also led the board through some difficult times, as the school district made plans to develop some district-owned property into much-needed athletic fields for North High and North Middle. Although the going was sometimes rough, replete with legal battles, Mona Fuchs kept a firm hand on the situation and kept moving forward. And now the district can look forward to those long-awaited playing fields at last.

Surely, the Great Neck community owes one big ''thank you'' to Mona Fuchs, for all that she has given, for all that she will continue to give as she begins another three-year term as trustee of the board of education.

We would also like to take this opportunity to offer our best wishes to board of education trustees Judi Bosworth and Lawrence Gross as they assume their new posts.

As board vice president for the past three years, Ms. Bosworth has had ample opportunity to show her leadership abilities. Very caring and very charming, Judi Bosworth has conducted several board meetings---some, contentious encounters---and each time she has let us know that this lovely rose definitely has a ''steely stem.'' Ever-gracious, she answered the toughest questions, always maintaining control of the situation.

Mr. Gross is surely up to his position too. With years of experience as a trustee, and seven of those years serving as board president, we are delighted that his knowledge and expertise will place him in the forefront once more.

We know that the Great Neck public schools, and the Great Neck community at large, are fortunate indeed to be able to entrust their highly acclaimed school district to such a professional, such a dedicated board---Judi Bosworth, Lawrence Gross, Donald Ashkenase, Barbara Berkowitz, and Mona Fuchs.

As always, we offer our support, as they prepare for a new school year.

Congratulations to Judi Bosworth and Larry Gross!
