The Great Neck South Girls track team under Coach Chris McKenzie finished out a successful season. At the State Qualifiers held at Mitchel Field, senior Claudine Compas placed fourth in the 100 meter dash in a time of 12.7, and placed third in the 200 meter dash in 25.9 qualifying her for the state championships for the third consecutive year. Compas chose not to compete in the States due to her going to her brother's college graduation. Compas did place fifth in the 200 at the Eastern State Championships also held at Mitchel Field June 9. Freshman Shenita McPhatter placed fourth in the 400 meter dash in 60.2. Junior Jennifer Lew placed 10th in the 400 hurdles in 76.3. Freshman Ebbony McPhatter placed 10th in the shot put 29' 9 1/4" and ninth in the discus with a toss of 87' 1". The Rebels placed fifth in the 4X100 relay with Compas, Shenita McPhatter, freshman Rachel Supris, sophomore Shirley Koon. Their time was 51.0.
At the Class B County Championships held at Mitchel Field May 20 and 21, South placed fourth with 31 points. Garden City was the Class B champions with 98 points. Southside was second with 65 points. Compas won the 100 and 200 meter dashes in 12.1 and 25.6 respectively. Shenita McPhatter placed second in the 400 meter dash in 60.9, good enough for a second place finish. Both McPhatter and Compas earned All County Honors. McPhatter placed sixth in the 200 in a time of 27.0. Compas and McPhatter teamed up in the 4X400 relay with Lew and Supris and placed fifth in 4:21.5. Ebbony McPhatter tossed the shot 29' 11", while Lew placed ninth in the 800 meter run in 2:30.4.
South placed third in the division championships with 64 points. Southside scored 181, followed by Garden City with 154. Ebbony McPhatter won the shot put in 30' 9 3/4". Ebbony placed second in the discus with a toss of 89' 6". Supris placed second in the 100 meter hurdles in 17.9. Supris placed sixth in the high jump with a leap of 4' 4". Compas won the 200 meter dash in 26.4. Shenita McPhatter placed second in the 400 meter dash in 61.2, and third in the 200 in 27.0. The top three in each individual event earned All Division. Sophomore Patricia Hong placed fifth in the high jump in 4'4", and sixth in the triple jump in 29' 8 1/2". The 4X100 relay placed second while the 4X400 relay team placed fifth.
Coach Chris McKenzie was very pleased with the team. South won their heat of the 4X400 relay at the Penn Relays. The Rebels finished the conference season at 11-3. Twenty-six people were on the team and notes that with a healthy Danielle Brown next year in the shot, discus, triple jump will stay competitive. Sophomore Alexandra Jelcic was out most of the season with injury, and will be a big boost to distance running. Claudine Compas will graduate and head off to Brown University in the fall.
