Once again this year, as we wish our Jewish neighbors a happy and a healthy High Holiday season, we are issuing an appeal for these neighbors to please keep Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur safe holidays too.
Each fall, in anticipation of the High Holidays and the large crowds in attendance at services, temples in Great Neck appeal to village boards to permit lifting of parking restrictions for that handful of days. And each year the villages gladly oblige, lifting specific restrictions for ''no parking'' at certain times. However, never do the villages lift restrictions on parking in areas that do not allow parking at any time.
When an area is designated ''no parking anytime'' this is done for a reason. Cars parked in that area could prove a hazard to other drivers or will block streets, making it difficult, or even impossible, for emergency equipment to get through. No one should ever, ever park in a spot designated ''no parking anytime.''
We know that some villages do ask the temples to alert their congregations as to where they may and may not park during the High Holidays. We echo this request. And we further urge all temples to stress the inherent dangers in parking illegally.
Strathmore is a perfect example. This small community off Old Mill Road is convenient to many temples, making it easy for people to park and walk. Now there are areas where one can park in Strathmore, but the ''no parking anytime'' areas really mean what they say. Parking in such areas further narrows the already narrow roads. It's hard to see around some corners when cars are illegally parked. And we really hate to envision the scene if there should be a fire and large equipment tried to get through. In a fire, or a medical emergency, seconds really do count!
So, please, as you celebrate Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, please do think of the safety of others, and do not even think of parking in ''no parking anytime'' spots.
Illegal parking can, and often does, cause accidents and contribute to disasters.
Let's all do our very best to make this High Holiday season a happy time and a safe time.
