The Kings Point wrestling team had a 3-0 week and improved their record to 7-4 with victories over SUNY Maritime (50-0), Western New England College (37-17) and Trinity (34-20) this past week.

The Kings Point wrestling team won every match en route to a 50-0 win over SUNY Maritime on Wednesday, Jan. 26. To start the match, junior Josh Allsop (Estates Park, CO) had a win by technical fall at 157 pounds. Freshman Trevor Battles (South Bend, IN) had the next Blue and Gray win at 165 pounds with a pin (0:42). At 174, freshman Brendan Ballard (Whitney Point, NY) won a 4-2 decision, while at 184 pounds sophomore Joe Vogelbacher (Charlotte, NC) came back from a 7-2 deficit to pin his opponent to 4:24. At 197, freshman Jeff Nicholson (Dunbar, PA) won a 9-7 decision. The most exciting match of the night came in the heavyweight division as junior Ben Rae (Columbia, SC) tied his opponent with a 6-6 score at the end of regulation, earning a point due to ride time. In the extra period, Rae exploded for five points, winning by an 11-6 score. In the final match, sophomore Alan Thornhill (Parker, CO) pinned his opponent at 2:19 in the 149-pound weight class. In exhibition matches, senior captain Morgan Hill (Croton, NY) and sophomore Colin Gold (Estel Manor, NJ) both won by pin.

On Saturday, Jan. 29, the Mariners hosted a double dual match and took on Western New England College and Trinity. Against Western New England, the Mariners started off with an 8-0 win by decision by Nicholson at 197 pounds. After dropping the next two matches, the Mariners trailed by an 11-4 score. Four Golden Bear wrestlers failed to make weight and the Blue and Gray took a 28-11 lead after forfeits at 133, 141, 149 and 157 pounds. At 165 pounds, Battles won a 15-6 decision to increase the Kings Point lead to 32-11. Ballard then posted a 23-4 technical fall in his match at 174. Kings Point dropped the last match and the final score was 37-17.

In the second match of the day, Kings Point took on the Trinity College Bantams, who entered the bout with a 10-6 overall record. Kings Point won the first match by forfeit and then dropped the heavyweight match making the score 6-6. At 125 pounds, sophomore Dave Coburn (Beloit, WI) and pinned his opponent in 2:12 to put the Blue and Gray ahead 12-6. Trinity won the 133 pound match by pin and 141 match by technical fall and took a 17-12 lead. Thornhill closed the gap to one point with a 15-4 decision at 149 pounds. In the next match Allsop exploded onto the mat and pinned his man in just 13 seconds, putting Kings Point ahead for good. Battles registered his second win of the day with a pin at 165 pounds. Rounding out the Blue and Gray's scoring was Vogelbacher who won by pin (2:57) to make the final score 34-20. Captain Morgan Hill won an exhibition match by an 11-6 score.

The Kings Point women's basketball team dropped to 2-6 on the year with a loss at home against Hunter College (JV) by a 41-28 score on Friday, Jan. 28. Hunter jumped out to an 18-15 halftime lead and then went on a 15-2 run to start the second half. The Blue and Gray were led by freshman guard Mickey Stark (Fargo, ND) who scored seven points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Senior guard Jen Lundy (Charleroi, PA) had six points, five rebounds and four assists while freshman forward Beth Sharp (Portland, OR) had five points and seven rebounds.

The women's basketball team defeated SUNY Maritime by 29-21 in the Bronx on Monday, Jan. 24, for their second win of the season. Kings Point jumped out to a 13-1 lead in the first half after leading by as many as five points. The Blue and Gray never looked back and posted the 29-21 victory. Lundy led the team with 10 points and eight rebounds. Stark scored eight points and grabbed seven rebounds in the win and Sharp led the rebounding effort with nine grabs.

The men's volleyball team improved to 4-1 overall as they went 3-0 and won the Kings Point Invitational in Liebertz Gymnasium on Super bowl Sunday. Kings Point defeated Rivier (15-1, 15-6, 15-5), Newbury (15-1, 15-3, 15-1) and Medaille (15-6, 9-15, 15-13, 15-10). Freshman Ray Harmer (Bridgewater, NJ) had 27 kills (2.7 per game) and 3.4 digs per game in the three matches. Senior Scott Gordon (Cedar City, UT) registered 2.88 kills per game (23 total kills) and 4.13 digs per game. Senior Dave Silen (St. Helens, OR) registered a team-high 2.13 blocks per game. Sophomore Tim Porter (Beavercreek, OH) broke an Academy Record with nine service aces in a match.

Earlier in the week, the men's volleyball team won their first match of the season at SUNY Maritime. On Friday, Jan. 28, the Blue and Gray defeated the Privateers by a 3-1 final score. The individual game scores were 15-6, 6-15, 15-3, 15-4. Kings Point was led offensively by seniors Jeremy Riddle (White Hall, MD) and Silen, who each tallied nine kills. Riddle led the team in service aces with four. Sophomore setter Dave Van Duzee (Saugus, CA) had 26 assists and Gordon registered seven digs.

The swimming and diving teams had an up-and-down week, defeating Lehman on the road and then falling to Coast Guard in the last home meet of the year.

Against Lehman on Jan. 26, the men's team won by a 129-70 score while the women won 108-74. Junior James Hogan (Woodland, CA) won the 20 Individual Medley (2:03.13) and the 500 Free (4:58.32). Hogan's 500 was a terrific swim as he broke the five-minute mark. Freshman Scott Payne (Virginia Beach, VA) was also a double winner. He touched the wall first in the 50 Free (22.98) and the 100 Free (50.04). Junior Danielle Henderson (Marietta, GA) swam a season best in the 200 Free, winning the event in 2:07.55.

On Friday night, the men's swimming and diving team dropped to 8-3 overall with a 128-114 loss to Coast Guard. It was Coast Guard's 56th consecutive dual-meet win. Hogan and senior Sean Hoffman (North Webster, IN) dominated the freestyle events and were both double winners. Hogan won the distance events, placing first in the 500 (5:01.41) and the 1000 (10:19.71). Hoffman was the top sprinter, touching the wall first in the 50 (22.17) and the 100 (49.88). The other winners for Kings Point were Payne and Paul Kim (Los Angeles, CA). Payne won the 200 Fly (2:04.19) and Kim won the 200 Back (2:05.46).

The Mariners' women's team fell to 6-5 overall with a 82.5-112.5 loss to Coast Guard on Friday, Jan. 28, in O'Hara Hall Pool. Freshman Mary Drennan (Crystal Lake, IL) had a spectacular swim for the Blue and Gray placing first after knocking almost six seconds off her personal-best in the 1000 Free (12:15.79). Sophomores Michelle Gates (Dallas, TX) and Raegan Kirk (Massilon, OH) won the 100 Fly (1:04.92) and the 100 Back (1:02.86) respectively. Freshman Kristina Nielson (Barryton, KS) won the one-meter diving event.

The men's basketball team fell by a 79-59 score Sunday afternoon at Vassar College. Vassar extended their winning streak to nine games and improved 13-4 overall, while the Blue and Gray dropped to 10-7 overall. The Mariners were slow from the get-go and didn't score their first points until 16:39. At that point, the Brewers already had a 10-2 lead that they increased to 22-7 over the next four minutes. Vassar held a 42-30 halftime lead and then went on a 9-0 run to start the second half. The final score was 79-59 in favor of Vassar. The Mariners missed senior center Mike Hyland (White Plains, NY) who was sidelined due to an injury, and were outrebounded by a 55-31 margin. Senior Johnny Garrett (Missouri City, TX) and sophomore Nate Barton (Hummelstown, PA) each scored 17 points and Garrett grabbed a team high nine boards. Freshman Seth Cobb (Marietta, GA) had 11 points and five rebounds.

Kris Houghton qualified for the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships with a 4:14 mile this past weekend.

On Friday, Jan. 28, the Blue and Gray Indoor Track and Field team competed at the Wesleyan Invitational. Freshman Steve Hohenshelt (Brookfield, CT) won the shot put with a 13.80m throw while freshman John Rapacki (Hauppauge, NY) placed sixth in the pole vault. Sophomore Tim McLaughlin (Roslyn, PA) placed eighth in the weight throw with an 11.11m throw. Freshman Tim Smith (Sharpsburg, MD) was ninth in the 800 in a time of 2:09.84.

The highlight of the weekend came on Saturday when freshman Kris Houghton (Beaverton, OR) qualified for the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships after running the mile event in a time of 4:14 at Boston University. His time in the mile was the second-fastest time in Division III this year and set a new Academy record. He finished second in the race however, as he raced against the man who now has the fastest time this year. Houghton, who went to the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships this past fall, ran the first 1/2 mile in 2:09.50 and the second 1/2 mile almost five seconds faster in 2:04.10. Also in Boston, junior Wayne Alen (Danbury, TX) ran the 55 meter dash in 6:59, just .09 seconds off an NCAA provisional qualifying time. Allen also placed 17th overall in the 400 meters (51.10).
