June N. Bruce, 73, a long term resident of Great Neck, died on Aug. 22, 2000, after a three year struggle with cancer. She grew up in Chicago and graduated from the University of Chicago, then moved to NYC, then to Great Neck in 1964. After work as an editor with Macmillan Publishing, she left the business world for about eight years while her children were growing. She taught English in the NYC public schools for two years, then turned to what became her main career, which was in public relations. Ms. Bruce worked for the Atomic Energy Commission, then became a spokesperson for LILCO. He next position was with ISO (Insurance Service Organization) in NY. She retired from ISO in 1997. After retirement she was active as a Literacy Volunteer. Ms. Bruce was an active member of the League of Women Voters and gave generously to charities including the NY Times Fund for the Neediest and the American Cancer Society.

Ms. Bruce was proudest of her membership in the LI Biking Club and despite her modest stature, she was easily capable of 50 miles a day or more. She toured five countries of western Europe, western Canada and parts of the US with her companion, fearing no hill. She was also much interested in art, music, ballet and the theater.

Ms. Bruce is survived by her daughters Diane Bruce Sinclair of Metuchen, NJ, and Claudia Forest of New Paltz, NY, three grandchildren, her brother Irwin Novick of Mt. Vernon, and her longtime companion Joseph Hazel.

Her marriage to Robert Bruce ended in divorce.
