The Kings Point baseball team wrapped up the season last week after playing seven games in seven days. After dropping the first game, the Mariners won their last six consecutive games.
The week began on the road against the Lehman College Lightning. The Mariners fell by a 6-4 score. Sophomore Jay DeBruhl (Camden, SC) had a strong day for the Blue and Gray after going 3-5 with a double, an RBI, and a stolen base.
The next day, Kings Point rebounded with an 11-1 victory over SUNY Maritime on Lower Roosevelt Field. Jumping ahead by a score of 3-0 in the first inning, the Mariners never looked back. Freshman Jon Burnett (Helena, MT) earned the win after going seven innings from the mound. He allowed seven hits and his first earned run of the season. He also fanned 12 batters while walking just three. DeBruhl, junior Mike Albritton (Tampa, FL), and junior Jeff Dahl (Fairfax Station, VA) each had two hits for the Kings Point offense which generated 12 hits in the game. Albritton was 2-2 and was on base following all five of his at-bats. He walked twice, was hit by a pitch, hit a double, scored a run, and registered two RBI. DeBruhl was 2-4 with a run, an RBI, and a stolen base while Dahl was 2-6 with two runs and two RBI.
On Thursday, April 27 Kings Point had another commanding win as they downed John Jay by a 16-1 final score. Senior captain Ruffin Warren (Hickory, NC) made an unscheduled start and was the winning pitcher after throwing six innings. He allowed four hits, one unearned run, and struck out two. Senior Scott Lundwall (Tuscon, AZ) came on to pitch the seventh and eighth innings. He struck out the side in the seventh and fanned two in the eighth. Pitching the ninth was Albritton, who faced just three batters and struck one out. Neither reliever allowed a hit. At the plate, sophomore Jeremy Chorik (Holidaysburg, PA) was the catalyst for Kings Point, going 3-4 with a double, a run, four RBI, and a stolen base. Jon Burnett, Jeff Dahl, and DeBruhl all were 2-5 on the day.
Over the weekend, Kings Point had two doubleheaders on Long Island, squaring off against Polytech on Saturday and St. Joseph's on Sunday, winning all four games. On Saturday, Kings Point downed Polytech by scores of 20-0 and 15-4. In both games, Kings Point jumped out to early leads. In Game #1, the Mariners opened up a 3-0 lead in the first and never looked back. Freshman Packard Trent (Fairmont, WV) threw the shutout for the Blue and Gray, allowing just two hits. He struck out five. The Mariners drilled the ball for 16 hits including three by freshman shortstop Brian Kelly (Palm City, FL). Freshman Harlow Wood (Powsbo, WA) hit a pinch-hit grand slam in his only at-bat of the game. In the second game, Kings Point scored eight runs in the first inning en route to the 15-4 win. Warren had an inside-the-park homerun in the first inning to help to take the early lead. Sophomore Will Felch (Lancaster, TX) went 3-5 with a triple, three runs, and an RBI while Albritton was 2-3 with a double, a triple, three runs and two RBI. Sophomore Anthony Migliorini (Fullerton, CA) was the winning pitcher.
Fresh from four straight wins, the Mariners headed east on Long Island on Saturday to face St. Joseph's an won two more games, 11-1 and 13-6. Albritton won the first game from the mound after throwing all seven innings. He allowed two hits, no earned runs, and four walks. He struck out 12 batters in the game. Dahl was a perfect 3-3 with two triples, two runs, and two RBI. Junior catcher Ken Graff (Dix Hills, NY) went 2-3 with two RBI and a run. Lundwall pitched the second game and earned the win after striking out 10 batters. He allowed two earned runs on nine hits in the 13-6 win.
Jeff Dahl had an outstanding week, batting .444 and slugging .852. He went 12-27 on the week with 11 runs, a double, five triples, 11 RBI and a stolen base. Mike Albritton also had stellar numbers in the three appearances that he had from the mound. He threw 15 innings allowing six hits and two earned runs. He walked eight and struck out an amazing 16 batters. Currently, Albritton ranks third in the nation in strikeouts per nine innings with an average of 13.3.
Kings Point Lacrosse earned their fourth consecutive bid to the ECAC Metro NY/NJ Championship Tournament last week as the #3 seed. The Mariners traveled to FDU-Madison for the semifinal game on Friday, April 28 for a 3:00 pm game and fell by a score of 13-8. They finished the season with an 8-5 record, and a Knickerbocker Conference record of 6-1.
Kings Point and FDU traded goals early on in the game, but the Devils took the momentum into the locker rooms at the half, leading 7-5. Kings Point came within two, 10-8, from a goal by sophomore Phil Egge (Alexandria, VA), but the Devils scored three more times to put the game out of reach.
The Mariners were led by Egge, who finished the game with a team-high three goals, and he also handed out one assist. Freshman attacker Ross Cutler (Vienna, VA) added three more assists to his numbers to finish the season with an Academy record 33 assists. Cutler broke the Academy's record for assists in a season, which was previously set at 32. Senior Brandt Hager (Annapolis, MD), playing in his final game as a Mariner, posted two goals ending a brilliant career. Freshman Nick Watts (Safety Harbor, FL), who has scored often lately, tallied two strikes, and sophomore Frank Zingales (East Northport, NY) notched one goal. Senior goaltender Morgan Ames (Alexandria, VA) ended his career on the Devils home field, stopping 12 shots, including five in the first quarter. Ames finished the season with 150 saves.
Despite falling in an exciting 13-12 overtime game to the Montclair State Red Hawks on April 25 in the final regular-season game, the Mariners earned the inaugural Knickerbocker Lacrosse Conference Title. The loss created a three-way tie for first place in the Knickerbocker Conference between Kings Point, Richard Stockton and Montclair State, which all own 6-1 Knickerbocker records. By virtue of the tie-breaker (goals allowed in games versus the three tied teams), Kings Point won the title. During the season, Richard Stockton defeated Montclair (15-5), Kings Point defeated Richard Stockton (15-2), and Montclair defeated Kings Point (13-12). Therefore, Kings Point allowed 15 goals, Richard Stockton allowed 20 goals, and Montclair allowed 27 goals.
In Tuesday's loss, Montclair's Will Van Dorn created the tie, registering two unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to even the score at 12-12. In the overtime period, Pat Lukasko scored the winning goal just 13 seconds into the period. Senior Brandt Hager (Annapolis, MD) contributed a hat trick for the Mariners with three goals. Freshman Jim Krantz (Downington, PA), this week's Knickerbocker Rookie of the week, added five points with two goals and three assists. Sophomore Phil Egge and freshman Nick Watts also each scored two goals. Senior goalie Morgan Ames had 19 saves for Kings Point in the loss.
The Kings Point sailing team needed to finish in the top four at the America Trophy to receive an invitation to the 2000 ICYRA North American Coed Dinghy Championships. The Mariners missed the spot by two places, finishing the Regatta in sixth place.
The team tallied 168 points sailing in two divisions. The A-Division boat, consisting of sophomore skipper Matt Schubert (Annapolis, MD), and crews Casey Williams (Wilson, WY) and Janna Ott (Las Vegas, NV) finished their division in sixth place. In B Division, sophomore skipper Chris Breland (Rockwall, TX) and crews Casey Williams and Jared Leigh (Pasadena, MD) posted a fifth-place finish. Both divisions started the race with top results, but near the end, Kings Point would fall to fifth and then to sixth place. The Academy will host the 2000 ICYRA North American Coed Dinghy Championships in June.
The Mariners also sent representatives to compete at the Moody Trophy. Kings Point did not fare as well as the above team, finishing the Regatta in 11th place. In the A Division, the Blue and Gray finished in 10th place, while the B-Division boat tallied a 12th place finish. Kings Point will race their final Regatta of the season on May 13-14 at the Engineer's Cup at Webb.
The softball team played six games last week and will wrap up the 2000 campaign with a doubleheader on May 2. The Mariners currently stand at 4-22 overall, heading into their final week of play. Kings Point and the Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders split two games on April 24 to start the week. In the first game, Rutgers posted a 14-4 victory while in the second the Mariners won by a score of 16-10. The Scarlet Raiders jumped ahead in game #1 with nine runs in the top of the first inning. Senior Shawna Stallings (Seabrook, TX) had the loss for Kings Point, giving up 14 runs on just eight hits. She also walked nine. At the plate, Kings Point was paced by sophomore catcher Kelly Glanding (Newark, DE) who was 2-3 with a run scored and a walk.
In Game #2, Rutgers jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a run in the second and two runs in the top of the third. Kings Point responded with six runs in the bottom of the third to take a 6-4 edge. The Scarlet Raiders scored six in fourth to take the lead back at 10-6. Kings Point then answered with 10 runs in the fifth to post the 16-10 victory. Stallings threw the second game and was 1-1 on the day, giving up seven hits in game #2. She was 3-5 from the plate with a stolen base and two RBI.
On Saturday, April 29, Kings Point traveled to Wesleyan University in Middleton, CT for two games and fell by scores of 13-3 and 7-2. Stallings was the losing pitcher in both games. Freshman Mickey Stark (Fargo, ND) was 1-3 with a run and an RBI in game #1. In the second game, junior Malia Schoch (Kaneohe, HI) was 1-3 with two RBI and Stallings was 1-3 with a run scored. After the game, the Mariners continued north towards Boston where they stayed overnight in preparation for Sunday's game. On April 30, the Blue and Gray squared off against Newbury at Pine Manor College. Kings Point split the two games with an 11-5 loss and a 12-10 win. Kelly Glanding was 5-6 in the two games with five runs, a double, and two RBI. In the win, the Mariners got two hits apiece from senior Coleen Quinn (Brick, NJ), Brenda Matheson (Alamo, CA), Malia Schoch and Shawna Stallings.
Tennis stands at 13-1 on the year after sweeping the Beavers of CCNY on April 25, defeating Staten Island by forfeit on April 28, and downing Western Connecticut on April 29 by an 8-1 score.
Against CCNY, senior captain Bernie Deysson (Stamford, CT), won the #1 singles match, 10-1. From there, Kings Point swept the remaining singles matches. Senior Justin Crawford (Sun Lakes, AZ), freshman Brent Thompson (Appleton, MN), senior Mike Price (Fridley, MN), freshman Zach Mouton (New Iberia, LA), and sophomore Rob Harris (Las Vegas, NV) won the #2 through #6 singles matches respectively. The Mariners won all three doubles matches behind strong showings. The duo of sophomore Rob Harris (Las Vegas, NV) and freshman Sang Yi (Bethesda, MD) won their match 8-7. The pair of senior Mike Price (Fridley, MN) and Brent Thompson, and Bernie Deysson and Justin Crawford also won their matches.
On Friday, April 28, the Mariners improved to 12-1 overall with a forfeit win over Staten Island.
The Mariners won their fifth consecutive tennis match on April 29 after an 8-1 victory over Western Connecticut. Kings Point won all of the singles matches and only fell at #2 doubles this afternoon. Bernie Deysson, won the #1 singles match, 6-3, 6-4. At #2, Justin Crawford won 6-1, 6-1. At #3, Zach Mouton had a 6-0, 6-2 victory. Brent Thompson and Mike Price won at #4 and #5. Thompson won a 6-0, 6-0 shutout and Price only lost one game en route to a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Freshman John Lynch (Milton, DE) won by forfeit at #6. In doubles play, sophomore Mike Rattigan (Sarasota, FL) and junior Mark Shanks (Bel Air, MD) won by an 8-1 score. Price and Sang Yi won by forfeit in doubles action.
Freshman runner Kris Houghton (Beaverton, OR) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships at the Penn Relays on April 27. Houghton finished the 5000 meters in 14:47.37, placing 29th in the event. Houghton's time was 10 seconds faster than the qualifying time. His time is currently 13th in the nation in this event. The top 15 times (minimum) in the country will qualify to compete at North Central (IL) on May 24-27.
On Day #2 at the Penn Relays, the Mariners 4x400 relay team competed. Kings Point raced in a heat of other Collegiate Track Conference teams and placed fifth in a time of 3:23.97, just a second off of the Academy Record. Senior captain Wayne Allen (Danbury, TX) ran the fastest split in 48.3. Senior captain Scott Sleeper (McKinney, TX) ran a 50.1 split, junior Eric Horton (Liverpool, NY) ran a 50.6 split, and freshman Mike Brady (Ft. Myers, FL) ran a 54.1 split.
On Sunday, April 30 the Mariners traveled to Yale University to compete against the likes of: UConn, Yale, Brown, Marist, Army, Holy Cross, St. John's, Columbia, Montclair, Stony Brook, Hofstra, Pace, and Boston University. Allen was fourth in the 100-meter dash in 10.81. Houghton was fifth in the 1500 in a time of 4:03.76. Brady had his best long jump of the year with a leap of 20' 5", finishing in 16th place. Sophomore Tim McLaughlin (Roslyn, PA) placed 16th with his best throw of the year in the discus (134'6") and freshman Steve Hohenshelt (Brookfield, CT) placed 13th in the shot put (45' 7")
