The village election in Kings Point generated a stunning turnout of approximately 900 voters who overwhelmingly re-elected trustees Richard Sokolov and Peter Aron against Jeffrey Pittell, a relatively unknown candidate perceived as a backer of the Chabad variances for a multi-use center on East Shore Road.
When the votes were announced, Sokolov, 747; Aaron, 742; and Pittell, 147, one man rushed over to Mayor Michael Kalnick and said, "This is your mandate." Many residents of Kings Point have organized to fight the size and scope of the proposal for the 70,000 square foot building that would be situated squarely in the midst of 10 private homes.
Both trustees expressed their gratitude that village residents recognize their many hours of work for the village. Mr. Aron said, "We certainly don't do what we do for the thanks, but we're delighted that so many people care and appreciate our efforts." Mr. Sokolov concurred. Mr. Pittell was not present at the count for comment.
Although rumors had circulated that there would be a write-in candidacy, no such votes turned up.
