Every person who lives or works in Great Neck, who breathes the air or drinks the water supplied by the Water Authority of Great Neck North is eligible to be a member-at-large of SCAG. There are no dues. Residents whose water is supplied by Manhasset-Lakeville Water District are also eligible if they live or work in the vicinity of the Stanton Cleaners Area Groundwater Contamination EPA Superfund Site in Great Neck.

Immediately following the general meeting there will be an exciting program "ABCs of Great Neck's Water Supply. Where It Comes From and How We Can Protect It." Spectacular computer models, audiovisual and presentations by top professionals will help the community visualize what is under the ground.

Fifty monitoring wells have been drilled in the vicinity of the Terrace Apartments, the Party Giant shopping mall and the Stanton Cleaners Area site on Great Neck Road. This project is under the direction of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA); NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Spills Unit and Hazardous Waste Unit to locate the plumes of contamination from gasoline and PCE spills in the 1980s.

SCAG has examined quarterly engineering reports made available by the DEC Spoils Unit and is sharing the information with the Water Authority of Great Neck North, the EPA and the community.

The good news is that the crew is back at work at the EPA Superfund site at Stanton Cleaners. Federal funding, temporarily delayed, has arrived to pay for the installation of the shelf-style stripper that will remove PCE contamination from the groundwater before it reaches the WAGNN drinking water wells. The Soil Vapor Extraction units show very low levels of the hazardous waste PCE in the surrounding buildings on site. EPA Removal Unit, headed by engineer Lou Di Guardia is now on the site full time once again.

The Board of Directors nominated by SCAG for the year 2001-2002 to be presented at the Annual Meeting on Oct. 11 is alphabetically listed as follows: Rolinda Antone, Bernard Charlop, Bonnie-Lynne Gould, Jody Kass, Arnold Keppler, Joan Keppler, Ruth Kogel, Rosemary Konatich, Patrick McNamara, Julie McCabe, Edith Mendel, Seymour Olshin, Sander Schweiger, Shirley Siegal and Colette Thaw. They are all respected, hard working residents of Great Neck. Officers to be nominated from this group are: President - Shirley Siegal, Vice President, Outreach - Bernard Charlop, Vice President, Code Enforcement - Joan Keppler, Secretary - Bonnie-Lynne Gould, Treasurer - Patrick MacNamara,

SCAG wishes to thank the editor of the Great Neck Record for transmitting this important information to the community. The quality of our water supply and the air we breathe depends on public awareness. The mandate of SCAG demands that the cleanup of the Great Neck Stanton Cleaners Superfund site uses the best possible design and is carried through to completion in a timely manner.

The EPA project engineer has returned the hydrogeologic investigation report to the contractor for correction of omissions. The technical advisors hired by SCAG under its EPA grant have been waiting to review this report along with a flow and transport model to determine the location and direction of flow of the plumes of contaminated groundwater.
