Evelyn J. Port, longtime Great Neck resident, died Dec. 2, 2001 at the age of 56. Her children, Darren and Stephanie, were at her side when she succumbed to cancer after a long and very courageous struggle with the disease. Evie moved to Great Neck after her marriage to Garrett Port in 1967 and over the next 25 years was active in the community, both professionally and as a volunteer. She was an elementary school teacher before becoming a residential real estate broker in Great Neck. She also served in numerous positions in the Erev Chapter of Hadassah before becoming its president. After her husband died in 1986, Evie remained in Great Neck to raise her children and continue her involvement in the community. In 1995, she moved to North Hills. Widely respected by her many friends and colleagues, she inspired all who knew her with her loyalty, kindness and strength of character. At her funeral on Dec. 4 at Temple Beth-El of Great Neck, she was eulogized by her son, Darren, and longtime friend, Jayne Goldstein, and remembered by the countless people who attended to pay their last respects to a woman who meant so much to so many. She is also survived by her mother, Margot, of Great Neck; her sisters Joan (Marc) Mintz and Karen (Steven) Yager; sister-in-law Penny (Lenny) Port Goldberg; and many nieces and nephews. The family has requested that contributions be made in her memory to Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York.
