As the recent Town of North Hempstead public hearing granting approval for a domestic partnership registry came to a close, Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman called it "a proud moment." Councilman Wayne Wink, who sponsored the legislation, also spoke of pride: pride in his fellow councilmen who had heartily endorsed the new law and pride in a town that was quick to show such overwhelming support.
We congratulate Jon Kaiman, Wayne Wink, Tony D'Urso, Thomas Dwyer, Fred Pollack and Robert Troiano for their compassion, for their acceptance, for their strong desire to do "the right thing," for their bold move in allowing North Hempstead to become the first town in Nassau County to recognize domestic partners.
The town board itself is made up of a diverse group of men. There are different backgrounds, different religions, yet each one was confident that the right thing to do was to provide equal treatment, "equal rights," for each and every town resident.
Supervisor Kaiman and the board members were available to personally discuss the issue with residents prior to the meeting last week and they spent close to two hours listening to individual opinions at the public hearing, allowing each speaker as much time as needed. Each view was treated with interest and respect. Both at the meeting and in the adoption of this new legislation, all six men proved that they really are interested in equal treatment for all of their constituents.
Yes, Mr. Kaiman, it was a "proud moment" for all of us who live in North Hempstead!
