Is Long Island Ready for a Disaster?
"We're an island, and no one is getting off," stated New York State Senator Michael Balboni, as he discussed emergency preparedness with editors of Anton Community Newspapers recently. Senator Balboni, who chairs the New York State Senate Committee on Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs, addressed his brand new committee report, "After the Storm ... New York's State of Readiness." And while the state has made some improvements in countering a catastrophic event, the senator gave barely passing grades to both Nassau County and Suffolk County.

Update on Stanton Superfund Cleanup
Three residents of the building next to the former Plaza Tennis site, situated next to Stanton Cleaners, attended the Stanton Cleaners Area Community Group, Inc. community informational meeting on Jan. 26 at Great Neck Plaza Village Hall. One asked why so many government environmental agencies were present at the meeting. They wanted to know the status of the groundwater, soil and air contamination cleanup and whether pollutants were coming into their windows.
