I was born in Israel. The year was 1951; the country was three years old. I was born into rationing, wars, and uncertainty, yet the feeling was one of tremendous courage and self-sacrifice. When I was in kindergarten, we planted trees in the sandy dunes of my hometown on the shores of the Mediterranean. Fifteen years later, as a teenager I played and walked through what had now become a thick forest, the same one that I had planted in kindergarten.
