The North Shore Fencers Club, established in 2005 as an after school fencing program, is now one of the premier fencing clubs in the Metropolitan area. In celebration of its one year anniversary, the club held a series of fencing tournaments.
The Men's and Women's Epee competition, on Saturday, Nov. 4, drew 53 of the top Epee fencers in the tri-state area. The competition pitted the highest ranked junior female Epee fencers in Nassau County; Sari Levy, a sophomore from Great Neck North High School and Ashley Titan a junior from Great Neck South High School. North Shore Fencers club, headed by Coach Vladimir Gofman is located in 240 Community Drive, tucked behind the Highfield Gardens Nursing Home.
Coach Gofman, who began training national champions in the old Soviet Union over 40 years ago, has continued his dedicated work by training many young American athletes. The club is also supported by a diverse team of young, accomplished coaches who have won multiple world titles. Vladimir says that accomplishments do not happen fortuitously; it is the student's drive and continuous hard work that lead to this success.
Athletes like Sari, who show up daily after school, dedicate countless hours to the sport of fencing. The club members travel together to participate in tournaments throughout the country. Coach Gofman added proudly that the true achievement is not just helping train young students to compete successfully in National Championships, but rather a more concealed reward. Fencing coaches from the most prestigious universities' often call to discuss recommendation for these promising athletes.
