Town Turns Down Religious School

Great Neck Plaza’s much anticipated Annual AutoFest and Street Festival returns for its 29-year on Sunday, Sept. 29. Sponsored by the Plaza and the Plaza BID (Business Improvement District), this year the event will feature the custom built 1926 Stutz “Speedster.”

A one-of-a-kind, the “Speedster” was custom built for Cornelius and Grace Vanderbilt. This vintage Stutz Speedster is making a rare public appearance on Long Island for this special Great Neck Plaza event.

“Our goal continues to bring a variety of unique automobiles to our AutoFest that families and car enthusiasts can enjoy and appreciate,” said Jay Corn, BID vice president and AutoFest committee chairperson.  “We are very excited to add the Stutz Speedster to this year’s AutoFest lineup because of its historical significance to the region and the automobile industry.”

This spectacular Stutz Speedster features the Vanderbilt family colors, maroon and black, and was part of the introduction of the original “Vertical Eight” engine.  The Speedster was considered to be technologically ahead of its time when it was built. The vehicle’s custom engine produced a higher horsepower than its competitors, including the Cadillac, Duesenberg, Kissel, Lincoln, Packard and Wills Ste Clair.  The vintage vehicle also features a fitted “connestoga” top, which provided the Vanderbilts with comfort.

In addition to the 1926 custom-made Stutz Speedster, over 100 vintage vehicles are expected to be on display at the AutoFest/Street Festival, including Model A Fords, Camaros, Matadors, Corvettes and other classic American and European cars.

This day-long Plaza event draws a crowd of tens of thousands and features live entertainment, rock climbing walls, a petting zoo, carnival games, inflatable bouncers. As well, it showcases the sights, sounds and flavors of Great Neck Plaza. Log onto or call 516 829-1301 to learn more about the Great Neck Plaza BID and this year’s AutoFest and Street Festival.
