Great Neck lost one of its longtime residents last week when Dr. Robert S. Breakstone, 88, died peacefully in his sleep on July 23, 2011 as a result of complications following open-heart surgery. Survived by his wife, Myra, his children Judy, Diane, David and Amy, and 11grandchildren, Dr. Breakstone had been active in the community since moving here in 1955. Among his most notable contributions to the local scene was his work as a founding member of the Great Neck Human Rights Committee. An ardent supporter of Israel, Dr. Breakstone also established American Dental Volunteers for Israel (ADVI), an organization that would eventually send more than 1,500 dentists and dental hygienists to Israel's kibbutzim. After spending several summers there as a volunteer himself, he and his wife settled on Kibbutz Tzora in 1983, where they would spend half of their time for the next 25 years. Earlier in his career, Dr. Breakstone served as a captain in the Coast Guard during the Korean War.
