Doris Freed Shaffer, 80, of Manhattan and Goose Pond, MA, died from cancer peacefully at her home on June 2, 2009. She and her husband Donald had lived in Great Neck for almost four decades before retiring to New York City. Their three sons were raised in Great Neck and were graduated from the North High School.
Her life was characterized by devotion to family and commitment to social justice. Doris graduated from Brooklyn College and NYU. She was a professor of history at Nassau Community College for 28 years. She was president of the NCC Federation of Teachers there from 1973 to 1987 and was in the leadership when the union signed the first collective bargaining agreement in higher education. Doris was a founding member of the Nassau chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union and was elected to the board of the New York Civil Liberties Union where she served as a member for 35 years. She was also an active supporter of Fund for Modern Courts, The Nation, Center for Constitutional Rights, SANE/Peace Action and the New Israel Fund.
She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Donald; her brother Jack; sons, Nathan, David and Robert; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial is planned for June 14 at 3 p.m. at the New York Historical Society, 170 Central Park West at 76th St.
