North High School’s student newspaper, Guide Post, recently received Second Place for Most Outstanding Newspaper in the Adelphi University Quill Awards for Outstanding Journalism and third place out of five chosen winners for the New York Press Association Excellence Awards–Best High School Newspaper.

Faculty sponsor is Jodi Kahn, journalism teacher and study skills department chair.
For the sixth time in seven years, the Great Neck Public School District has been named among the “Best Communities for Music Education” by the NAMM Foundation, a coalition of music and educational organizations.
According to a NAMM spokesperson, “This year’s 307 winning districts represent a record-breaking year for participation, indicative of growing support from both parents and administrators who recognize the vital role that music learning plays in student achievement.”
The 46 students whose names follow are eighth grade students at the Richard S. Sherman–North Middle School and are recipients of Board of Education Certificates of Commendation for contributing to the quality of life at their school. The students, in alphabetical order, are: Andrew Abrudescu, Sherzod Bakhtiyarov, Spencer Berman, Jessica Bonheur, Nicholas Bornstein, Gabriella Burgos, Alejandra Depetris, Adriana Ghalandar, Julia Goldsamt, Lauren Goldsamt, Jordan Greiff, Charles Hakimi, Sidonya Hakimi, Daniel Hirsch, Weiyin Jiao, Sandra Kashani, Diana Kim, Gabriella Kokhabi, Samantha Kramer, Zachary Lee, Isabel Lesser, Julia Lesser, Camryn Lessing, Adam Manesh, Carly Menker, Alexandra Mirro, Ryan Motchkavitz, Maya Mualem, Jennifer Otruba, Daniel Petrikovsky, Julia Prager-Hessel, Samuel Ressler, Scott Rothbaum, Mickelle Roubeni, Ariella Rouhani, Jared Schwartz, Jacob Seidenberg, Ethan Shaktman, Aviva Shamian, Valerie Szuster, Joseph Taied, Jason Tanner, Tayler Tehrani, Katie Tropp-Levy, Matthew Weinstein, and Caitlin Yam.
The student honorees were joined by Board of Education members (President Barbara Berkowitz and trustees Donald Ashkenase, Monique Bloom, and Susan Healy; (Vice President Lawrence Gross was not in attendance); and school administrators (Superintendent Thomas Dolan, Assistant Superintendant,Secondary Stephen Lando; Principal Anael Alston, assistant principals Jason Mach and Samantha Tarantola, and deans Jennifer Andersen and Nancy Gunning.
North High School junior Katherine Cortez has won the 2013 Junior Travel Award for her achievement on the National Spanish Examination and her excellent skills in Spanish. She is one of 12 students to receive this award.
In addition to achieving a high score on the national exam, Katherine was required to submit samples of her written and oral work in Spanish to a selection committee appointed by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. In July, she will travel to Costa Rica with the other winners.
Katherine’s Spanish teacher is Lilian Krowne.
South Middle School students took first place in the Brookhaven National Laboratory/Long Island Middle School Science Bowl, sponsored by Brookhaven National Laboratory, a regional competition of the 23rd Annual U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl. The team will compete nationally in Washington, DC, later this month. They are: Lynn Hlaing, Matthew Ko, Allan Lee and Melody Yang. Their advisor/coach is Gail Keyes, science teacher.
