Fifteen South High School students received awards in the 2012–13 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Competition.
Gold Key award winners are: Emma Doremus, Ji Hyun (Jenny) Hwang and Eleanor Lee for photography; and KaiQi Zhu, drawing. These students have all received the highest level of achievement at the regional level and are now competing nationally.
Silver Key award winners are Houng Woo (Chris) Choi, drawing; Allison Hand, photography; and Eleanor Lee, photography.
Honorable Mention awards in photography went to: Emma Doremus, Jessica Graber, Beatrice Han, Allison Hand, Ji Hyun (Jenny) Hwang, Zarak Khan, Julia Marks, Maxwell Schneider and Gal Zeidman. Samatha Klainberg was an American Vision Nominee in photography. Houng Woo (Chris) Choi took an award in painting; and Casey Li and Alison Zhao took Honorable Mention in mixed media.
Teachers of these award-winning students are Karen Cuchel (department head), Safia Fatimi, Katie Saltoun and Lisa Stancati.
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is a prestigious competition that has been recognizing and celebrating emerging artists for the last 86 years. Their mission is to identify, validate, and motivate the next generation of artists and writers.
