High school students can maximize the chances of scoring well on the SAT and PSAT exams with an intensive preparation course that focuses on the Math and Verbal content. Students learn techniques that are essential for success—navigating difficult questions efficiently; answering the easier questions quickly; and eliminating wrong choices on unfamiliar vocabulary words. Instructor Anita Friedman pays particular attention to word problems by teaching students how to translate complicated problems into simple equations. The writing skills section is also covered in the course, which runs for five sessions, either Mondays, Aug. 19 to Sept. 23 (no class Sept. 2), or Tuesdays, Aug. 20 to Sept. 17. Times are 7:15 to 9:15 p.m. The fee is $99.
For parents who are concerned about college expenses, this class is a must. Geared to families whose income is too high for need-based financial aid, parents learn proven strategies for reducing the expense of sending a child to college. In this one-session class, John Carbonara educates parents in ways to avoid expensive mistakes when paying for college. These strategies include things do before applying for college, how to pay for college with pre-tax dollars, how to receive money from schools even if you don’t qualify for aid, and how to send your child to a private university for about the same cost as a state school. Parents leave with useful strategies that can be implemented immediately. This class meets Tuesday, Sept. 24, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Fee: $15.
If it’s time for you to purchase a new cell phone or upgrade from an existing phone and the choices become overwhelming, you can be guided through the confusion. Leave this workshop with a better idea of the wireless service options as well as the type of phone to purchase, be it Apple, Android, regular phone, smartphone, etc. Class meets Monday, Sept. 9, from 7 to 9 p.m. Fee: $39.
Make the most of your Android smartphone or tablet with this helpful workshop on Smartphone applications (apps). A technical expert, Woody Greenberg, teaches you how to search the Play Store on Android smartphones and tablets; you can then download an amazing number of applications that help simplify life. Examples? Read newspapers and periodicals, listen to music, find restaurants, turn the device in to a GPS navigation system, or view films, just to name a few. This workshop meets Tuesday, Sept. 9, from 1 to 3 p.m. The fee is $39.
Excel spreadsheets are not just for businesses anymore. More and more frequently, spreadsheets are used for personal use, such as tracking financial analysis, managing budgets, creating address books, listing collectibles, and much more. Woody Greenberg and Marianne Terzi teach the fundamental principles of using Excel. Learn how to navigate spreadsheets; enter, edit, and delete data; change column and row sizes; calculate values with formulas; format the spreadsheet components; and view/print the spreadsheet. This three-session course meets Tuesdays, Sept. 10 to 24, from 7 to 9 p.m. Fee: $129 (includes workbook pages).
